La Gotteria’s lecture explores the rise of curiosity as a cultural and literary force in 17th-century Paris, a period marked by growing public interest in news, social intrigue, and fashionable literature. As the capital was living the turbulent times of the Fronde revolution, and the consequent rise of Louis XIV’s absolutism, literary salons and new periodicals (such as the Mercure galant) expanded the market for stories and fed the appetite of readers eager for nouvelles, which spanned from gossip about their peers to news from the city to playful entertainment. La Grotteria’s research examines how this curiosity shaped the literary production of the time, leading to new and innovative genres.
