Heritage and the Anthropocene

The Anthropocene is a new geological epoch defined by the planetary impact of human activities. What are its implications for heritage?

The rapidly changing climates of the Anthropocene confront the heritage sector with complex and profound challenges—from the physical conservation of vulnerable estates, to the presentation and curation of issues such as mass extinction and environmental collapse, to the negotiation of new roles, new publics and new accountabilities in a time of escalating environmental crisis.

What is the place of heritage in this new historical context? What forms will it take, what methods will it adopt, what issues will it address? To explore these questions, the working group establishes a forum for talks, discussion and collaborations that engage with the full range of experiments and methodologies, practices, theoretical frameworks and institutional forms that are emerging around the critical epochal juncture of the Anthropocene.
