2013 project: Democracy and the right to vote (completed)

In 2013, we celebrated the hundredth anniversary of universal suffrage being introduced in Norway, granting women the same citizenship rights as men. This interdisciplinary project on the fight for and implementation of women's political rights was initiated in honor of the anniversary.

About the project

The anniversary was well suited to interdisciplinary studies. We plannied seminars with elements of history, law and politics/sociology.

For students

Our ambition was to find an international viewpoint to the anniversary, and we hoped to get students interested in writing about when their great-grandmothers and great-great-great-grandmothers or people living in Norway today gained the right to vote and how political rights have been put to use in Norway, Sweden, Pakistan, India, Vietnam and so on. This generated new knowledge in 2013.

Project competitions for pupils

Under the auspices of the schools section of the Norwegian Historical Association (HIFO), we invited students at lower and upper secondary school to enter project competitions. The pupils could use bachelor’s and master’s dissertations from UiO as background material.
