Mål
Hovedmålet var å etablere oppdatert kunnskap om norsk skipsfart som en dominerende internasjonal aktør og samtidig kaste lys over næringens betydning for norsk økonomisk og politisk historie.
Bakgrunn
Gjennom prosjektetet skulle utviklingen i norsk internasjonal skipsfart beskrives og forklares. Noen sentrale spørsmål var hva som ligger til grunn for den sterke posisjonen norsk skipsfart har inntatt, både nasjonalt og internasjonalt; hvordan norske aktører har evnet å hevde seg i konkurransen ute og hjemme og hvordan næringen har satt spor etter seg i ulike deler av norsk økonomi og samfunnsliv.
