Laon (BM, Ms 444, fol. 94v).

Martin of Laon is one of the most prominent teachers in the ninth century. However, any attempt to understand his thought and influence is facing a serious challenge: almost no text can be safely attributed to him. He might have been one of the few bilingual, Greek and Latin, writers of his time – or might have left not a single verse at all.

Therefore, this paper will try to point out a different approach to Martin by focusing not on authorship, but on his role as a compiler of teaching material, who coordinated (and partly contributed to) the work of a group of scribes. Thus, the paper will shed light on the sophisticated communication strategies in Carolingian schools.

Bernhard Hollick is a postdoctoral fellow in History (IAKH).

NB! This time we are meeting in GM 652 (not 452).

The event is open to the public, and all interested parties are cordially invited to attend. A Zoom link will be provided via the Classics Seminar mailing list. If you would like to subscribe to the list (or present at the seminar), please get in touch with Tor Ivar Østmoe. Following the presentation, we will gather at Café Eckers for drinks and further informal discussions. Everyone is welcome to join (please note that expenses are not covered by the seminar).
