While objets trouvés such as shells have played an important role in Southern Chinese craftsmanship for centuries, modern types of found objects such as plastic garbage have recently been integrated into design. This essay investigates creative practices of reusing organic and inorganic (waste) materials by focusing on a number of wearable and collectible jewelry objects made by artists and designers in Hong Kong. Its approach is informed by early modern sources on craftsmanship and materiality and the work of Jane Bennett, Gaston Bachelard and Chetput Venkatasubban Seshadi. The chapter argues that the power of discarded materials in the hands of creative practitioners based in South China can be seen as undermining the material hierarchies of commercial trade, blurring distinctions between ‘the local’ and ‘the global’ and subversive in terms of agency, prompting and to a certain extent guiding their makers’ hands, rather than the other way round.

The reuse and recycling of materials that were made in China has a short history in the daily activities of private households worldwide, but a long history in art, craft, and design. Focusing on the practices of artists, craftspeople, and designers, and their re-evaluation of unwanted, pre-used, and discarded materials, this volume presents new research on material culture from China, one of the world’s leading waste-receiving and waste-producing countries, in a global context. Through the lens of an ecocritical history of art, craft, and design, it studies creative engagements with matter related to aspects of (dis)connectivity, considering how the meanings and values attributed to objects and raw materials can change radically as they travel across historical and cultural divides. "A captivating account of the cycles of use, waste and reinvention that animate modern and contemporary China. The authors capture the dexterity of artists and craftspeople who imagine, picture, signify, fashion and terraform the aesthetic dimension. With vivid detail, the chapters highlight the ingenuity of Chinese material culture in the complexity of its global circulation and planetary transformation. (Re)Made is a necessary volume for anyone seeking to inform their perspective of China’s impact on today’s political ecologies." Amanda Boetzkes, author of Plastic Capitalism: Contemporary Art and the Drive to Waste

This introduction discusses the eleven contributions to the edited volume (Re)made in China Material (Dis)connections, Art, and Creative Reuse in relation to developments in contemporary global history, discusses terminological issues, relevant scholarship, and historical examples of creative reuse and recycling of material culture from China in a global context. By considering how the meanings and values attributed to objects and raw materials change through practices of creative reuse, it provides news ways of writing the histories of art and material culture made in China through the lens of (dis)connectivity and with a focus on remaking and resources rather than authorship, authenticity, origin, or originality. The volume thereby contributes to the rapidly growing field of ecocritical perspectives on art made in China.
