About the project

The consortium project “Home in Crisis” engages with the idea of the climate crisis as one that is unfolding inside our homes. We combine methods and approaches from law, theatre and the humanities to examine legal and non-legal codifications of "home" in the context of global environmental change.

Legal concepts and definitions often fall short in the encounter with climate crisis and its consequences.  The project develops experimental, research-based interventions that can challenge – and expand – legal understandings of "home" and "crisis."

The project is a collaboration between researchers in Norway, Denmark, Ireland, and the United Kingdom, with associated partners in Canada and South Africa.

The Norwegian subproject, based at UiO, focuses on understanding participatory, research-based theatre methods as knowledge practice and as a form of testimony. These methods can highlight lived experiences and make them relevant in spaces where they have previously been excluded.

Purpose

"Home in Crisis" aims to challenge conventional legal understandings and enrich both legal discourse and methodology. The purpose is to better enable legal systems to recognize and respond to the breadth of what is being changed, lost and damaged by the climate crisis.

In the process, we also aim to develop new understandings of the climate crisis, its impacts, and how these ought to be addressed within (and beyond) the law.
