Academic interests
My main research interest is political rhetoric, which includes everything from technical administrative language, to politicians' discourse and debate, to the rhetoric of civil society, public opinion, and social movements. I am particularly interested in how these different layers work together, and how this has changed over time. I am currently doing research on trust, on the public, and on pragmatism as a political (anti-)theory.
Another research interest is how national identity and self-understanding – particularly in Norway and the Nordic countries – is created rhetorically. In this area, I am currently working on Norway's foreign policy and how this is presented to domestic audiences. Finally, I have an interest in the history of rhetoric, particularly in Greek antiquity, where I work particularly on the sophists.
I am chief editor of the Nordic Encyclopedia of Rhetoric, Nordisk Retorikkleksikon.
