We will cover the topic of AI and ethics along four main lines:
- AI as a societal phenomenon that we may study empirically through a range of methods, which all prompt potential ethical concerns.
- AI as a philosophical phenomenon, which both raises novel ethical issues and also asks us to reconsider concepts like responsibility, authorship, and agency
- AI as a set of methods and tools that we may employ in humanities research, yet that also imply new challenges for research ethics.
- AI as a topic in your dissertation, notably how you discuss choices made in this regard and how you handle the availability of AI tools in the writing and editing process.
Preparations: Students will be asked to prepare a position paper (approx. 2 pages) in advance of the course where they reflect on the role of generative AI in their project based in the course readings. The papers will be circulated among all students in advance. Students are expected to have read the course readings and each other’s papers ahead of the course and engage actively in discussions.
The course will consist of one full day of lectures in the morning and student presentations in the afternoon. Attendance is mandatory. The course is passed if (1) the position paper covers the expected literature and displays mature thinking and (2) the student participates actively, constructively and thoughtfully during the course day. If the position paper needs improvement to pass, the student may resubmit after the course upon having conferred with the convenors.
Students who attend the course as described above will obtain 1 ECTS. Those interested in additional credits, may resubmit a revised and expanded version of their memo (max. 4 pages) after the course and obtain a total of 2 ECTS.
