The makerspace is a workshop where students and researchers can prototype and fabricate new musical instruments and devices, as well as modify or repair existing ones. This is achieved using hand tools, electronics, fast electronic prototyping platforms, and machines such as 3D printers and laser cutters.
In addition to physical fabrication and assembly, sound synthesis is a crucial component of digital musical instruments. To facilitate understanding of typical sound synthesis processes and their varied elements, IMV has expanded its collection of synthesizers. This collection now includes one large and a set of portable, classroom-ready modular synthesizers. These resources provide students and researchers with firsthand, tangible experiences in exploring both traditional and novel approaches to sound synthesis, opening up endless possibilities for creative sonic landscapes by patching small sound generating pr sound processing modules. This complements IMV's computer-based systems available for experimentation with sound synthesis.
The transformation of the old Elektrolab into a fully-equipped Makerspace, along with the addition of modular synthesis systems, has been made possible with support from HF's infrastructure funds.
We look forward to the coming years, during which a new generation of students and researchers can take advantage of these facilities to fully unleash their creative potential in designing and making new music-making and performance devices. Simultaneously, the makerspace supports a more sustainable approach to operating and maintaining our extensive facilities, as repairing and fixing can become the norm instead of disposing and replacing items with new ones. This aims to have a positive environmental and financial impact on IMV operations.
Welcome to the official opening of our new makerspace and modular synthesis systems.
