The midway assessment is organised in two parts, and starts with a two-hour public seminar, followed by a closed meeting.

The purpose of the midway assessment is to evaluate the progress of the PhD project at a point when it is still possible to make small or more substantial changes.

Programme:

10:15 - 10:40 Welcome, and Presentation by Candidate Balint Laczko

10:45 - 11:45 Comments by, and discussion with Palle Dahlstedt

11:45 - 12:00 Plenary discussion with the public

Following the public event, there will be a closed meeting between the candidate, invited opponent, and supervisors (12:00 - 12:30).

Summary:

Perceptually Aligned Deep Image Sonification

Image sonification is when data relationships in images are displayed as perceived auditory relationships, with the motivation that by listening we could get different insights about the phenomena captured on those images then via visual inspection. The "Deep" in the title refers to the field of Deep Learning (DL), as it is my main research objective to find out how DL could be used to solve the two major challenges of image sonification:

  • the perceptually aligned digital representation of images and sounds, and
  • the proportional mapping between such representations.

My research is situated in the AUTORHYTHM convergence environment, funded by UiO Life Science, an interdisciplinary collaboration investigating autophagy, the fundamental self-cleaning mechanism present in every living cell.
