Human Measurements: An Introduction to Experimental and Embodied Methods

This course introduces various experimental and empirical methods used in research on and with humans.

This course is a part of HF's PhD week.

This course introduces various experimental and empirical methods used in research on and with humans. Participants will receive an overview of techniques for collecting behavioural, physiological, and neural responses from individuals, including eye-tracking, pupillometry, physiological measurements (respiration, heart rate, and muscle activity), motion capture (optical and inertial), electroencephalography (EEG), and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). They will learn about the possibilities and limitations of each method and gain insights into what studies using these techniques might look like. The course briefly guides participants through an experimental study pipeline, covering core steps such as study design, data collection, and data analysis.

The course includes pre- and post-course assignments, including some readings and pre-recorded videos. Class time will focus primarily on live demonstrations of portable equipment, providing firsthand experience with the systems available in HF labs. Participants will also have the opportunity to engage in hands-on data-processing exercises through Jupyter notebooks.

This is a 1 ECTS course.
