This PhD seminar invites exploration of the ways in which aesthetic objects and experiences are produced, distributed, and consumed across various media and material conditions. With a focus on environments, broadly understood, we aim to investigate the aesthetic field as a dynamic site of interaction between form, medium, context, and reception.

The research group "Forms of resistance" brings together researchers from several fields, with a special orientation towards literature, aesthetics, philosophy, medicine, archive and media studies. The group will shed light on the concept of resistance both on a narrative, thematic level, and on an inner, more formal and theoretical level, aesthetically and technically as well as ethically.

Our goal is to deepen theoretical and empirical understandings of how states and public entities—through their actions, investments, and assets—are (re)qualified, commercialized, and marketed. We will further explore how experts or professionals contribute to structuring public-private relationships.

In an attempt to govern problems that do not have an addressee, institutions, organizations, and networks have evolved that seek to address, negotiate, and find solutions to major societal challenges.

In recent years, scholars in the humanities have recognized the important role that classical cultures play in political mythmaking. Rather than simply providing “legitimatory window-dressing” (phrasing of Roche 2018: 4), classical cultures can serve as powerful tools for catalyzing cultural consensus across social strata, legitimizing political action, and mobilizing people for political causes.

Social science genetics -- sometimes denoted sociogenomics -- is the emerging research field that is the interface between conventional social sciences and genetics. By combining data and methods from these two fields, we obtain new insights about both how both environmental and genetic factors contribute to variation in individual outcomes and ultimately social structures.

In this workshop, we continue to develop the concept of homology through theoretical clarification, innovations, and empirical applications. The central question is whether and how the concept of homology can advance field theory and explain practices and power relations across various empirical settings, scales, and times.

The heritage of ancient Greece is commonly acclaimed as a ‘pillar’ of common European culture and identity. The complex historical processes of cultural reception and appropriation that shaped this notion are, however, still hardly understood, partly due to institutional fragmentation of the field of early modern Hellenism.
