Academic Interests

I am a social anthropologist with a phd from the University of Oslo from 2008, on the role of kinship in Palestinian politics. Three main academic interests are:
1. Political culture; power, resistance and politics seen from below.
2. Political implications of changes of patriarchal structures in the Arab world.
3. Challenges related to lack of legitimate political representation in Palestinian politics, including the lack of refugee representation.

Teaching

I have taught the following courses at IKOS:
MØNA 1503 Midtøsten og Nordafrikas historie
MØNA 1504/2504 Kultur og samfunn i Midtøsten og Nord-Afrika
MØNA 2010/4010 Semesteroppgave
MØNA 3000 Bacheloroppgave i Midtøstenstudier.

Higher education and employment history

I have a permanent position as a first lecturer in Middle East studies. My PhD in Social Anthropology from 2008 is a comparative study on the role of kinship in Palestinian politics with fieldwork from Deir al Asad on the Israeli Palestinians, and the refugee camp Bureij in Gaza.

I have been a researcher from  2012, ending summer 2016, at The New Middle East Project (NewME)

I have been a researcher at three PRIO projects since 2010: In 2010 as researcher and project leader of the project “The rule of Hamas in Gaza: Rethinking the prospects for Peace” ; and “Prospects for Political Reforms in the PLO” in 2011, and as researcher at Jihadization of the PLO? Prospects and Implications of Hamas and Islamic Jihad membership, together with Jacob Høigilt in 2015.

In 2014 I published the book Palestinske utfordringer (Palestinian challenges), where the focus is on internal political challenges facing the Palestinians today.

I first went to the Middle East as a student of Arabic in 1987-1988. The following year I spent in the Arab Palestinian, Muslim village Deir al Asad, in North Israel. After finishing the cand.polit (MA) in Social Anthropology, with Arabic and Political Science, I worked two years as the Middle East co-ordinator for Fafo in Jerusalem, including fieldworks in Jordan and Gaza.

I was an official election observer for the elections in Palestine in 1996, 2005 (presidential) and 2006, and in Yemen in 1997 and Serbia 1996. I was an observer in Hebron for the TIPH mission (Temporary International Presence in Hebron), in 1996. I was an democratization officer in Bosnia for the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in 1997-99,  and a project coordinator for East Balkan for the Norwegian Peoples Aid in 1999-2000.
