The seminar presents this research program, whose aim is to reach a deeper understanding of the itineraries and patterns of diffusion architectural languages based on classical codes consolidated across Western Europe between 1650-1750. Major centres of elaboration and diffusion were Rome and Paris, where Academies endorsed the role of drawing, and promoted the production of prints and illustrated books as basic teaching materials, laying the foundation of a shared architectural language across the continent.
The research group will investigate architects and patrons’ collections of prints, drawings and illustrated books acquired during their training years in Rome, focusing on the bracing links between Italy and countries renovating their building traditions adopting Classicism for the first time.
Hosted by the Danish Academy in Rome, the working seminar welcomes scholars from the Nordic Academies in Rome to reinforce a dynamic research network among our countries.
