Category descriptions

Research Ethics

All candidates at the Faculty of Humanities must be ensured training in research ethics. This includes central ethical principles for research, as well as knowledge of relevant legislation and decision-making bodies. Parts of the training must consist in an in-depth study of ethical issues and dilemmas.

Theories of knowledge

All candidates will receive training in the task of addressing central question relating to theories of knowledge through the joint mandatory courses all must attend, and the advanced courses we offer. Through these courses, they will also be challenged to formulate their own epistemological positions.

Dissemination

All candidates will receive training in dissemination. This will be aimed at providing them with a realistic preparation for research communication, and the ability to reflect on academic freedom of expression. The training consists of a course offered by the Faculty of Humanities. It is possible to carry out, and have approved dissemination activities in addition to this course, but the ECTS thus achieved will be placed in the category for "Other courses or activities". If you have an idea for a dissemination activity you would like to carry out, get in touch with PhD-coordinator Atle Wold for an assessment of the activity and the number of ECTS it will yield.

Conference

All candidates must participate in international conference(s). An international conference is defined as a conference at which participants represent institutions from more than one country.

Text development

All candidates will receive training in text presentation and text critique by presenting their own text and commenting on the texts of others. The text development seminars may address different types of texts – such as a draft chapter for the PhD-thesis, or a draft conference paper – and the invitation to an individual seminar will specify precisely which kind of text is due be addressed, as well as the minimum number of pages required. All participants at text development seminars will need to both present and comment, for which you will be awarded 2 ECTS.

What does it mean to present and comment?

Each participant will submit a text in line with the requirements set out in the invitation to the seminar and prepare thorough comments to (a critique of) one of the other texts that have been submitted. Furthermore, each participant must have read all the texts that have been submitted to be presented and critiqued at the seminar and take part in the general discussion of these texts. The discussion follows on immediately after the prepared critique/comments to each individual text. The maximum number of participants will be specified for each individual seminar.

If the announced seminar is going to address texts for the PhD thesis, this should be texts that are still in the making, not finished chapters or articles. If the seminar deals with conference papers, this, too, must be a draft and not a paper that has already been presented at a conference. You may use a Power-Point-presentation or similar.

Who organises which text development seminars?

ILOS organises seminars for PhD-candidates in Literature and Area Studies, while ILN organises similar seminars for candidates in Language/Linguistics.

Methods

Method is a planned procedure for the formation of knowledge. All candidates must receive training that expands their methodological insights and skills, and that provides them with a critical approach to the forms of knowledge different methods produce.

Other courses or activities

Alongside the compulsory activities, candidates must collect a total of 11 ECTS to complete the requirements for the Educational Component. For this, you have a greater degree of freedom, but note that these non-compulsory activities are subject to the approval of the department's PhD-coordinator, and otherwise must conform with the rules set out for the Educational Component.

Approval of educational activity

Candidates are encouraged to plan their educational component in consultation with their supervisor and the PhD-coordinator. As a rule, all planned activities need to be approved in advance by the Department's PhD coordinator in order for them to be registered as part of the educational component. This also applies for any activities recommended by the supervisor(s).

1 ECTS corresponds to 25-30 hours of work. The candidates are themselves responsible for providing sufficient documentation detailing the extent of their participation and, where relevant, information that is necessary for calculation of ECTS.

Requests for approval of educational activity must be sent via online form:

Obligatory non-credit bearing activities

Welcome Seminar

All PhD-candidates at HF must attend a compulsory welcome seminar, which will provide an introduction to the PhD-programme, the Faculty of Humanities and the University of Oslo. A central theme in the seminar will be the nature of PhD-level supervision, and the candidates' supervisors are expected to attend the seminar.

Midway assessment

A midway assessment must be conducted for all candidates enrolled in the PhD-programme at the Faculty of Humanities. The midway assessment is thus a compulsory part of the PhD-training. The purpose of the midway assessment is to assess the progress of the project relative to its planned completion date. Read more here.

When handing in your dissertation

At the end of your program, you and the PhD coordinator must sign a form that indicates your completion of the educational component
