CPS Lunch Forum: Christian Airikka

Christian Airikka (IFIKK) will give a talk entitled "On Role Spacetime Functionalism".

Abstract

I discuss Spacetime Functionalism (SF) in the context of interpretations of Quantum Gravity (QG). According to proponents of SF, there exists a metaphysical gap between fundamental theories that lack spatiotemporal properties, such as theories of QG, and spacetime as it appears in the General Theory of Relativity. This gap is supposedly bridged by a functionalist account, wherein one interprets theories of QG by a two-step approach: first, the relevant properties of spacetime are functionalised, i.e., they are given new definitions in terms of their functional roles; then, it is demonstrated how lower-level structures can play these roles.

I start by discussing recent arguments against SF and show how they fail. I admit that realizer spacetime functionalism seems to be self-undermining and claim that if one is to be a functionalist about spacetime, one ought to be a role functionalist about spacetime. I then sketch out what such a position might entail.
