In this talk, Adam Izdebski (Nicolaus Copernicus University, Toruń) will present the ERC-funded project EUROpest. The aim is to understand past epidemics such as the Black Death and later waves of disease in Europe in all their complexity. To this end, the team integrates biological, ecological, and social factors and analyzes historical societies as dynamic socio-ecological systems. A wide variety of sources are incorporated, ranging from archaeogenetic data to pollen analyses, climate reconstructions, and written sources. This interdisciplinary approach opens up new perspectives on the interplay between environment, society, climate, and disease.
