  It doesn’t take much effort for a Palestinian to fall back on a narrative of recurring catastrophe, nakba, with Gaza the latest and most horrific in a long series of catastrophes. With Israel forbidding international media to enter Gaza, this newest catastrophe is mediated to us by the Gazans themselves. They try to communicate to us their suffering, but also other ways in which they want us to see them. How do we make sense of songs, smiles and small moments of hope in the middle of so much death and destruction? In their explicit defiance to being reduced to numbers, victims and refugees, Palestinians in Gaza challenge us who remain at a distance to think differently about the chronology of being Palestinian and re-inscribe it with a series of returns rather than catastrophes.

  The time span covered by The Routledge History of Fashion and Dress starts in the nineteenth century, with the aftermath of the consumers’ revolution, and reaches all the way to the present. The fashion and garment industries have been international from the beginning and, as such, this volume looks at the history of fashion and dress through the lenses of both international and global history. Because fashion is also a multifaceted subject with humanagency at its core, at the confluence of thematerial (fabrics, clothing, dyes, tools, and machines) and the immaterial (savoir-faire, identities, images, and brands), this volume adopts a transdisciplinary perspective, opening its pages to researchers from a variety of complementary fields. The chapters in this volume are organized based on their relationship to five fields of study: economics and commerce, politics, business, identities, and historical sources. Paying particular attention to change, the book goes beyond the great fashion capitals and well-known fashion centers and points to the broader geographies of fashion. Particular geographical areas focus on the emergence of new fashion systems and business models, whether they be in Sweden, Bangladesh, or Spain, or on the African continent, considered to be the “new frontier” of the industry.   This article looks at drug trafficking, trade, and pilgrimage between Lebanon, Syria, and Palestine during the mandate period, arguing that a Levantine geography continued both as lived experience and conceived space even after the introduction of borders post-WWI. Drawing on the work of Patrick Hutton, it argues that Levantine geography can only be understood by reformulating the relationship between history and memory and bringing in the lived experience of Levantines into the writing of history.

  When civil war broke out in Lebanon in April 1975, France, the former mandate power, found itself in a conundrum. Its centuries old connection to Lebanon as protector of the Maronite Christians meant much was expected from French authorities. At the same time France had established strong ties to the Palestine Liberation Organization another actor of the civil war. This thesis studies France’s involvement in the first half of the Lebanese Civil War, from 1975 to 1982. Officially France remained neutral in the conflict. The aim of this thesis is to look at the France’s initiatives and the policies elaborated towards the different actors of the war. Yet, the many initiatives worked more as a show of presence and not many, if any, had a profound impact on the war. The vague French slogan of keeping Lebanon’s integrity, sovereignty and unity became increasingly hard to follow. France also failed to deliver on its attempt to stay fully neutral. Sides were taken; however, depending on developments in Lebanon, it was sometimes towards the Maronites, sometimes towards the PLO. France found itself in an impossible balance, between old and new alliances, and as such was not able to change the course of war in any significant way.
