My PhD project is an examination of female actors in the early socialist movements, referred to by many as utopian socialism. A discussion of this term, invented by Friedrich Engels (1820-1895), will be included in the broader analysis of my project. The main focus of the project is to map and analyze the networks in early socialism (1800-1848), especially the role of women in establishing networks between France and England, and eventually in the United States. The project highlights women’s role in the early “utopian” socialist movements – Owenism, Fourierism and Saint-Simonianism – and the way many of the networks in and between these movements were created, facilitated and maintained through active female participants. The project revolves around three main themes: women's networking in early socialism, women's utopian ideology, and utopian socialism as religion.

  • Utopian socialism
  • Politics and religion
  • The revolutions of 1848
  • Marxism
  • Network analysis
  • History of concepts
