  Recent work in sociolinguistics criticizes labeling sets of linguistic practices as languages and varieties. A focal concept is translanguaging – while opening productive perspectives on linguistic behavior, this approach often claims that, linguistically speaking, there is no such thing as a language. In this chapter we argue that this ontological claim is too strong, and that bottom-up approach to activism that follows in its trail, is insufficient as a response to linguistically embedded social hierarchies and power inequalities. Linguistics has a checkered history; labeling of varieties and construction of language standards has served dubious ends. However, using Norway as a case in point and alluding to other cases of standardization and norm regulation, we argue that effective linguistic activism aimed at social justice sometimes requires the identification of varieties as linguistic objects. We reject a generalized language suspicion, because the anti-language approach to activism pushes out of theoretical reach a level of organization where social and political hierarchies are instituted and maintained – but where such hierarchies may also be challenged and altered. We conclude that socially engaged language scholars must struggle with the concrete contextual assessments that languages and varieties confront us with, and face the normative dilemmas that top-down political intervention on languages allegedly faces. Otherwise, important means of social justice are lost.

  This article focuses on the complex nature of the creative freedom often displayed in acts of digital social writing. Drawing on theoretical contributions from philosophy of language and psychology, the authors argue that even in communication where prescriptive norms are deliberately challenged, creative ways of multilectal and multilingual writing are still shaped by norms and normativity. Mutually recognized norms are part of the common ground that communicators must maintain to secure audience uptake.This is illustrated with three examples, where explicit and implicit negotiations of norms take place in online contexts. In both antagonistic and friendly contexts, we see that successful norm-violating communication involves a collaborative interplay of layers of normativity. Instances of norm shifts and norm challenges of the sort displayed here should not be seen as special cases or fringe phenomena, nor as acts of inherent socio-political significance, but as frequent and highly adaptable moves typical of human language use. Improvised norm shifts manifest a form of creativity that is basic to linguistic communicative competence.

  This paper suggests that a main concern of James Tartaglia’s Philosophy in a Meaningless Life is human freedom, and the ways in which it may be served (and hampered) by philosophy. Initial remarks about freedom and nihilism are followed (in Section II) by brief methodological considerations. Section III offers a reading of the idea of transcendence as Tartaglia deploys it, while Section IV makes use of a comparison with Richard Rorty’s understanding of the relation between philosophy and freedom in order to locate what is distinctive about Tartaglia’s approach. Finally, in Section V, it is suggested that freedom, in Tartaglia’s system of nihilism, is essentially a feature of finitude.

  A HOUSE DIVIDED, edited by Carlos G. Prado, examines cross-influences and similarities between pivotal thinkers in the analytic and Continental philosophical traditions. The various articles in this anthology establish that the two traditions have more in common than most think. Consideration of apparently unlikely but definite connections between Carnap and Nietzsche, Davidson and Gadamer, Quine and Heidegger, Searle and Foucault, and others, shows that, despite conventional wisdom and all-too-common mutual disparagement, contemporary philosophy does not divide neatly into two intellectual domains defined by incommensurable principles. The differences among these groupings of philosophers are more a matter of disparities among aggregates of university philosophy departments than a gulf between two fundamental perspectives, and the disparities are due more to selective reading, ingrained conversational styles, and scholarly inertia than to incompatible perspectives. The undeniable differences in the ways analytic and Continental--or "European"-- philosophers talk, write, and conduct their classes are largely methodological and canonical, and should not preclude useful philosophical dialogue. The insightful articles collected here are not blueprints for closer cooperation between philosophers with different methods and objectives, but they clearly demonstrate that regardless of approach and precedents, analytic and Continental philosophers are all doing philosophy, and there are many important and potentially productive points of contact between them. The contributors include Richard Rorty, Barry Allen, Babette E. Babich, David Cerbone, Sharyn Clough, Jonathan Kaplan, Richard Matthews, C. G. Prado, Bjorn Torgrim Ramberg, Mike Sandbothe, Barry Stocker, and Edward Witherspoon.

  Richard Rorty's neopragmatist philosophy marks him as one of the most gifted and controversial thinkers of his time. Antifoundationalism and antirepresentationalism are the guiding motifs in his thought. He wants to jettison a set of philosophical distinctions--appearance/reality, mind/body, morality/prudence--that have dominated and shaped the history of Western philosophy since the time of Plato. It is a position that has propelled him into a series of heated debates with philosophers who are the most influential of their generation--analytic philosophers such as Quine, Davidson, Rawls, and Putnam; as well as Continental philosophers, including Habermas, Derrida, Foucault, and Lyotard. At the same time, Rorty's work has helped to break down the artificial separation between these two wings of Western philosophy by acting as an intellectual bridge between them. This distinctive collection by scholars from around the world focuses upon the cultural, educational, and political significance of his thought. The nine essays which comprise the collection examine a variety of related themes: Rorty's neopragmatism, his view of philosophy, his philosophy of education and culture, Rorty's comparison between Dewey and Foucault, his relation to postmodern theory, and, also his form of political liberalism.

  Davidson believes that "it is good to be rid of representations"--good, we may presume, for the purposes of giving a philosophical account of the relations between thinking, language-using creatures--agents--and the world they think and talk about. He also thinks that we have good reason to reject the hypothesis that our beliefs about the world are largely mistaken. The second contention has received a great deal more attention than the first. Nevertheless, these two claims are so closely related that they may be seen as manifestations of a single line of thought, which we might call Davidson's anti-representationalism. In this paper I try to understand that line of thought.

  Tyler Burge has produced groundbreaking work on the semantics of proper names and indexicals, de re belief, formal truth theories, semantic and epistemic paradoxes, the philosophy of Gottlob Frege, and other areas of the philosophy of language and of mind. But he is best known for his arguments for anti-individualism, or externalism about mental content. Burge's aim in pursuing anti-individualism is nothing less than the solution to some of the most trenchant metaphysical and epistemological problems, including the nature of objectivity and norms, the force of skeptical arguments, apriority, and the nature of the self. Central to all of these is an account of intentional content that includes a penetrating critique of the empiricist notion of a concept. This book focuses mainly on Burge's work on anti-individualism. In it, various philosophers either comment on Burge's work or relate it to their own. An unusual feature is the generosity--both in volume and content--of Burge's contribution to this philosophical conversation. The section containing his responses comprises the most sustained, detailed, and interconnected body of writing that he has published in one place.

  Minority language scholarship is often conducted in socially and politically loaded contexts, that is, contexts of both historical and enduring injustice. How does the burden of injustice constrain the path to epistemic integrity that responsible scholarship requires? In this presentation we consider two very different types of case from Norway; the reclamation and revitalization of the languages of the historically oppressed indigenous Sami people, and the shaping and reshaping of the minoritized written language Nynorsk. We argue that while these are very different socio-political narratives, both suggest that epistemic legitimacy requires scholars to negotiate their positionality with respect to historical events as well as to current social conflict.

  Human struggles for identity, recognition, access, power, social control, and political change typically have a linguistic face. Accordingly, language often serves as a fulcrum of social conflict. Contested questions may concern what the proper form of language is, or who the legitimate users of a particular language are. Decisions regarding what counts as a language or “merely” a dialect and who gets to decide that, and on what grounds, may be both politically significant and highly divisive. Conflict may also arise as to which and whose languages are to be preserved, protected, and developed, and which are left to their contingent fate. In sociolinguistics such issues may be explicitly addressed. Even when they are not, they are still embedded in the immediate context of many empirical research projects. Consequently, scholarly research and community engagement are closely interwoven, as researchers enter highly charged political contexts. How do we navigate tensions between social and political aims and commitments, on the one hand, and the aspiration to produce narratives and analyses with enduring scholarly legitimacy, on the other? In this presentation, a group of scholars engaged in language research and language politics (in the Western Cape, in the Istrian peninsula of Croatia, in the United States, and in Norway) will present projects and work experience that illustrate some of the challenges and tensions of socially engaged scholarship. We also point to some possible responses to these dilemmas and blind spots from the perspective of philosophical pragmatism. Our guiding aim is to contribute to a notion of scholarly integrity that is suitable for disciplines in which pursuit of knowledge is constrained by the pursuit of justice.

  Denne oppgaven utforsker samtidens filosofiske og nevrovitenskapelige debatter om bevissthet gjennom en kritisk dialog mellom Friedrich Nietzsches perspektivisme, Gerald Edelmans Theory of Neuronal Group Selection (TNGS) og Daniel Dennetts funksjonalistiske rammeverk. Med fokus på tre kjerneproblemer – bevissthetens ontologiske og epistemologiske natur, samspillet mellom bevissthet og kropp/miljø, og forklarende strategier i bevissthetsforskning – analyserer oppgaven styrker og svakheter ved reduksjonistiske tilnærminger og fremmer Nietzsches antireduksjonistiske perspektiv som et verdifullt bidrag. Første del gir en oversikt over sentrale posisjoner i bevissthetsforskningen, inkludert dualisme, fysikalisme, idealisme og funksjonalisme. Funksjonalismen, som vektlegger organisasjonsstruktur, samsvarer med fremskritt i nevrovitenskap og kunstig intelligens, men sliter med å forklare subjektiv erfaring, som utfordrer reduktive modeller. Andre del sammenligner Dennetts og Edelmans teorier. Dennetts Multiple Drafts-modell reduserer bevissthet til funksjonelle narrativer, og avviser qualia som illusjoner, noe som gjør den forenlig med sterk AI, men sårbar for kritikk om å overse subjektivitet. Edelmans TNGS fremstiller bevissthet som et emergent fenomen fra nevronal plastisitet og reentrant signalling, og anerkjenner biologisk kompleksitet, men forklarer ikke fullt ut hvorfor nevrale prosesser gir opphav til qualia. Spenningen mellom Dennetts eliminative reduksjonisme og Edelmans emergentisme belyser motstridende forklaringsstrategier. Tredje del introduserer Nietzsches perspektivisme, som ser bevissthet som et overfladisk biprodukt av kroppslige dynamikker drevet av «viljen til makt». Hans avvisning av subjekt-objekt-skillet og vektlegging av affektiv, relasjonell flyt utfordrer reduksjonismens vitenskapelige pretensjoner. Nietzsche deler Edelmans ikke-komputasjonelle fysikalisme, men kritiserer nevrale kart som reduktive fiksjoner og avviser Dennetts eliminering av subjektiv erfaring, som han anser som essensiell. Hans tilnærming bygger broer mellom filosofi og nevrovitenskap ved å integrere kroppens materialitet med bevissthetens kontekstuelle natur. Oppgaven konkluderer at reduksjonistiske paradigmer, som Dennetts og Edelmans, utvider forståelsen av kognitive funksjoner, men ikke fanger bevissthetens subjektive rikdom. Nietzsches perspektivisme tilbyr et dynamisk, ikke-dualistisk alternativ som beriker debatten. Likevel medfører tverrfaglige tilnærminger metodologiske utfordringer, som spenningen mellom førstepersons- og tredjepersonsperspektiver og vanskeligheter med å operationalisere begreper som «viljen til makt». Oppgaven argumenterer for metodologisk pluralisme, der filosofiske og vitenskapelige innsikter kombineres, og inviterer til videre forskning for å belyse bevissthetens vedvarende mysterium.
