About the project

The project focuses on:

  • the structural comparison of character systems
  • the thematic analysis of the narrative construction of gender and sexuality, emotions, and the environment

The project argues that the dynamics and logics of historiography are revealed through comparison within and between medieval traditions.

The project undertakes a methodological experiment in the application of computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software (CAQDAS). Our hypothesizes is that this method has the potential to facilitate more systematic analysis, more structured comparison, and a more transparent mode of collaboration in the process.

While CAQDAS is commonly used in many fields, this basic technology has been overlooked by humanists, in general, and medieval historians, in particular.
