About the group

"Byzantium: Lives and Afterlives” is an interdisciplinary group for researchers working in the field of Byzantine studies, broadly conceived. It includes the history, art, theology, and philosophy of the Byzantine empire (330-1453), as well as the influence of Byzantium on later periods, its reception, and "Byzantinism".

Cooperation

The group consists of employees at the Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Theology at the University of Oslo and other Norwegian institutions.

The group are associated with the “Norsk komité for bysantinske studier” (the Norwegian Committee for Byzantine Studies), a national member of The International Association of Byzantine Studies. We work together with the Swedish and Danish associations to strengthen Scandinavian Byzantine studies.

We organise yearly seminars in addition to ad hoc events and research presentations.
