  It is generally accepted that there is a visual field, but the analogous notion of an auditory field is rejected by many philosophers on the grounds that the metaphysics or phenomenology of audition lack the necessary spatial structure. In this paper, I argue that many of the common objections to the existence of an auditory field are misguided and that, contrary to a tradition of philosophical scepticism about the spatiality of auditory experience, it is as richly spatial as visual experience — and in some ways even more so. By carefully considering the spatiality and boundedness of audition, along with how sounds or their sources are experienced as occurring within the surrounding acoustic environment, we can gain a better understanding of (i) our auditory experience of space and (ii) the conditions for the existence of spatial sensory fields in general in a way that does not privilege vision over the other senses.

  This paper focuses on how Jean Pillot, author of the most popular French grammar of the sixteenth century in terms of editions, took efforts to contrast his native language with Greek. His Gallicæ linguæ institutio (1550/1561), although written in Latin, contains numerous passages where Pillot subtly confronted French with Greek, surveyed in Section 2, in order to give his audience of educated German speakers a clearer view of the idiosyncrasies of French. In Section 3, I analyze why he preferred Greek to the other languages he knew in quite a number of cases, arguing that this subtle contrastive endeavor bore an indirect pedagogical and ideological load. Section 4 discusses the terminological means Pillot used to confront Greek with French, and their origins. In Section 5, I frame Pillot’s appropriation of Greek grammar in the long history of contrastive language studies, with special reference to the pivotal role of sixteenth-century linguistic analysis.

  This volume represents the final output of a long-standing collaboration by an international and cross-disciplinary team sponsored by the Centre for Advanced Study at the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters. It tells the history of human cultural production in the Eastern Mediterranean, rather than the history of specific states or religions. Simultaneously, the volume argues that the agency of local communities is a key to understanding the history of long-term change and cultural production in the Levant. It narrates the story of the crystallization of a type of sub imperial power, illustrated by the canonical discourses associated with Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

  The dual role of olfaction in both smelling and tasting, i.e. flavour perception, makes it an important test case for philosophical theories of sensory individuation. Indeed, the psychologist Paul Rozin claimed that olfaction is a “dual sense”, leading some scientists and philosophers to propose that we have not one, but two senses of smell: orthonasal and retronasal olfaction. In this paper I consider how best to understand Rozin’s claim, and upon what grounds one might judge there to be one or two distinct olfactory modalities. I conclude that while Rozin may be right that humans have dual occurrences of an olfactory ‘sense’, the concept of a sense-modality, and hence the ‘sense’ of smell, is ambiguous between two different notions: a physiological sensory channel and an experiential modality, along the lines suggested by J. J. Gibson. Furthermore, recognising that these are complementary rather than competing conceptions of a sense-modality enables the formulation of a powerful ‘dual-concept’ framework for posing and addressing questions concerning the complex architecture of human multisensory experience.

  This book deals with the use of Latin as a literary and epigraphic language under Italian Fascism (1922–1943). The myth of Rome lay at the heart of Italian Fascist ideology, and the ancient language of Rome, too, played an important role in the regime’s cultural politics. This collection deepens our understanding of ‘Fascist Latinity’, presents a range of previously little-known material, and opens up a number of new avenues of research. The chapters explore the pivotal role of Latin in constructing a link between ancient Rome and Fascist Italy; the different social and cultural contexts in which Latin texts functioned in the ventennio fascista; and the way in which ‘Fascist Latinity’ relied on, and manipulated, the ‘myth of Rome’ of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Italy.   Tellekantsystemet har blitt et symbol på New Public Management i styringen av universitetene. Et ankepunkt er bruken av publikasjonspoeng på individnivå. Artikkelen viser tellekantenes plass i forbindelse med tilsettinger i humanistiske fag ved Universitetet i Oslo. Ved å sammenlikne sakkyndige komitévurderinger og publikasjonspoeng i historie, arkeologi og konservering spør jeg hva som ville skjedd om de sakkyndige ble erstattet med bibliometri. I enkelte tilfeller ville andre søkere fått stillingene. Om resultatet ville vært dårligere, er et annet spørsmål.

  «Bøker har sin tid, og om noen bok har sin tid nå, er det Pesten.» kunne Jan Kjærstad konstatere i VG i mars 2020. Camus’ store roman fra 1947 hadde plutselig fått uventet aktualitet, og toppet bestselgerlistene i mange europeiske land. Penguin i Storbritannia kunne konstatere at interessen var så stor at de slet med å holde tritt med etterspørselen. Tilfeldighetene ville det slik at det akkurat i disse tider var planlagt en nyoversettelse av romanen til norsk, og også i Norge fikk Pesten enorm oppmerksomhet, og kapret sin plass på bestselgerlista. Hva var det som gjorde at akkurat Camus’ Pesten, fremfor noen annen pestroman, ble den store coronaromanen? Og hva hadde de samtidige hendelsene å si for resepsjonen og forståelsen av teksten? Er det noen iboende i Camus største verk som gjør de til særlig levende klassikere? Eller kan det være noe med samtiden nå som resonnerer særlig godt med Camus tekster? Vi har invitert oversetter Christine Amadou og oversetter Tom Lotherington til å diskutere nettopp dette. Begge er de erfarne oversettere som har prøvd seg på oppgaven å skulle oversette den store franske forfatteren til norsk. Amadou har i tillegg til Pesten oversatt Det første menneske. Lotherington har oversatt Fallet, og i tillegg den franske tegneren Jacques Ferrandez’ tegnesereadapsjon av Den fremmede.   In this talk I will be exploring the topic of heterogeneity in language development and language outcomes among individuals with autism spectrum conditions. Although variability of language ability is widely attested in this population, much of the research on language in ASC has been focused on a relatively restricted subset of the spectrum. I will discuss both methodological issues related to assessing diverse profiles of autism as well as benefits that may be drawn. I argue that variability may be an assent in better understanding underlying cognitive processes. Specifically in this talk I will explore the topic of comprehension and expression of referential expressions in autism spectrum conditions, drawing on previous work developed in my doctoral thesis and finally touch on new ideas on development of non-literal language understanding across individuals with ASC.

  My dissertation focuses on Galen’s refutation of atomism and represents an attempt to contribute to the debate on his role as a source of information on previous and contemporary philosophical and scientific thought. In particular, I will seek to demonstrate that, even if influenced by both his medical and philosophical rivalry, and his strategy of self-presentation, Galen gives a reliable account of the anti-teleologism and the theory of matter posited by the Epicureans and the physician Asclepiades of Bithynia. The atomists and Asclepiades, who developed a corpuscular system that Galen assimilates to Epicureanism and considers as the philosophical inspiration of the Methodical school of medicine, are his ideological rivals and the target of harsh criticism. The hypothesis of invisible particles without secondary qualities and void as the fundamental elements of the perceptible bodies, and the idea that features, physiology and anatomical structures of the species are not ascribed to a final cause, but only to atomic motion and entanglements, are unacceptable to Galen. Therefore, their antiteleologism, denial of qualitative change and, through Asclepiades, the application of these principles within medicine are the main reasons for Galen’s recurrent mocking and fierce attacks. Unlike his rivals, Galen is, indeed, a fervent teleologist and a continuist, who places himself within the “design argument tradition” of Hippocrates, Plato and Aristotle. Thus, Galen is a hostile source of atomism that, as a philosopher and a doctor who deals with the highly competitive medical environment of imperial Rome, has a specific agenda and a precise historiographical strategy. In my dissertation I will try to demonstrate Galen’s reliability by closely analyzing his fullest accounts of atomistic antiteleologism and elementary theory in De Usu Partium and De Elementis, and providing a comparison with Lucretius. In addition, I will also focus on Asclepiades’ notion of ὄγκοι and theory of flux, attempting to reconstruct their philosophical backgrounds. As a result, 2 I will argue that, although Asclepiades admitted the divisibility of his corpuscles, his physiological system shares, as Galen points out, its main principles with Epicureanism.

  This doctoral dissertation examines the biological thinking associated with the surrealist movement in France and Denmark of the 1930s. I focus on the work of seven thinkers and artists who deeply engaged with the discipline of biology—Roger Caillois, Pierre Mabille, René Allendy, Wilhelm Reich, Vilhelm Bjerke Petersen, Richard Mortensen, and Sonja Ferlov—in order to show how surrealism’s intellectual ambitions reached well beyond the realms of art and art history and into the history of the life sciences. Through a detailed investigation of the scientific sources of surrealism, I show how surrealism engaged with the discipline of biology in very specific ways. Each chapter is devoted to exploring theories of biological life, as formulated by the respective figures in the dissertation, that amounts to what one might call a surrealist form of biology. Furthermore, through the prism of biology, hitherto unrecognised relationships between the surrealist circles of Paris and Copenhagen comes into relief, thus enabling us to rethink the delimitation of the movement itself. The dissertation maps and interprets surrealism’s participation in a range of debates about biology and the very definition and status of life in the 1930s and it demonstrates how these debates are imbricated in prescient artistic, bio-political, and social issues of this era. I show how surrealism’s engagement with biology was concerned with negotiating the relationship between concepts of organic holism and vital excess. The key thinkers and artists of the dissertation tacked back and forth between a holistic form of biology that conceptualised the organism as an interconnected whole and formulating a notion of organic life as an excessive phenomenon that atomised the boundaries of the holistic organism. This duality provides a novel set of concepts and antinomies with which to interpret the surrealist avant-garde.

  Avhandlingen tar for seg de intellektuelle brytningene i en av de mest intense kulturelle og politiske konfliktene i 1930 -tallets Norge: striden om Guds grønne enger. Striden oppsto høsten 1932 da det ble kjent at Nationaltheatret ville sette opp Marc Connellys skuespill, der Gud står på scenen i en svart manns skikkelse. Stykket ble sagt å være blasfemisk, og en bølge av protester reiste seg. Titusener krevde strengere lovverk mot blasfemi, noe dikteren Arnulf Øverland besvarte med et foredrag som snart fikk ham stilt for retten. Utallige organisasjoner og alle de tre statsmakter ble trukket inn i striden, som også bidro til opprettelsen av Kristelig Folkeparti. Først da Stortinget våren 1934 vedtok en skjerpelse av strafelovens blasfemiparagraf fikk konflikten en slutt. Hvordan kunne et tilsynelatende harmløst skuespill utløse en slik konflikt? For å besvare spørsmålet gransker avhandlingen stridens meningsbrytninger og hvordan de grep inn i betente konflikter i norsk tankeliv. Dette gjøres gjennom kontekstualisering av et omfattende kildemateriale og identifikasjon av sentrale tankemønstre knyttet til teologi, teater, rase, rett og politikk. En sentral teologisk innvending mot stykket var dets menneskeliggjøring av guddommen. Særlig problematisk var det at Gud skulle fremstilles på teateret, som i seg selv var en omstridt kunstform. Samtidig ble debatten preget av nordmenns forestillinger om «negeren», med bakgrunn i erfaringer fra misjon og underholdningsliv. Jeg viser dessuten at saken satte langvarige spor, både på grunn av forestillingen om blasfemi som ble knesatt i den nye blasfemiparagrafen – og ved at striden endret det norske politiske landskapet. Med striden om Guds grønne enger som utgangspunkt folder avhandlingen ut noen av mellomkrigstidens sentrale ideer om tro, kunst, rase og politikk – og den viser at konflikten i 1932–1934 fortjener en plass som et viktig kapittel i mellomkrigstidens norske idéhistorie.

• Toft-Eriksen, Lars (2020). Based on a True Story: Rereading Rolf Stenersen's Image of Edvard Munch and the Myth of Genius. Oslo 07-Media. Show summary

  The mythic image of Edvard Munch figures centrally in the story of his art and life. Over the past decades art historical studies have challenged this myth through critical and contextual perspectives. However, the mythic image of the artist lingers on. Rolf Stenersen’s biography Edvard Munch: Close-Up of a Genius (1944) has arguably more than any other biography contributed to Munch’s mythic image. In this dissertation I critically explore the image of Munch as it is conveyed in Stenersen’s biography, and argue that it plays into and fosters a particular mythic image, which may be understood in light of the discourse of genius in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. More precisely, I argue that this image may be contextualized with reference to specific conceptualizations of genius, spanning from Romanticist and Modernist aesthetics and art theory to theories within the fields of physiognomy, psychopathology, sexology and psychoanalysis. In line with the discourse of genius and its various iterations within these contexts of reference, I maintain that Stenersen’s image of Munch may be read in light of an overarching notion of genius as a more or less irrational or unconscious mode of creativity. Furthermore, I argue that this mythic image is produced through a certain biographical form of mythopoeic significance. That is to say that the anecdote, understood as a rhetorical device, plays on an ambivalence within the discourse of genius, and that the anecdote through this ambivalence has a certain effect of the ‘real,’ corroborating the overall mythic image of Munch, making it seem natural and thus confirming and invigorating the reader’s stereotypical notions of the artist-genius as a cultural figure.

  The dissertation consists of five separate papers, an introduction, and a conclusion. The first paper provides an account of how we come to know what other people say to us on particular occasions. Your friend utters the sentence ‘butterflies have taste receptors on their feet’ in your presence, and you come to know right away that she said that butterflies have taste receptors on their feet. How do you come to know this fact? It is argued that we know facts about what a speaker has said in making an utterance partly in virtue of knowing other facts, including facts about what words mean, and facts about the context of the utterance. The second paper defends an account of what it is to understand an utterance. What does it take for you to understand your friend’s utterance about butterflies? And what is the relation between utterance understanding and knowledge? It is argued that understanding cannot be understood in terms of knowledge of what is said, because such knowledge is neither necessary nor sufficient for understanding. It is suggested that understanding must be understood in terms of a notion closely related to that of knowledge, namely cognitive achievement. The third paper turns to testimonial justification. Suppose you adopt the belief that butterflies have taste receptors on their feet on the basis of your friend’s utterance. What does it take for you to be justified in this belief? It is argued that testimonial justification cannot be understood as a kind of immediate or noninferential justification, contrary to what many suppose. The fourth paper provides a positive account of testimonial justification. It defends a middle ground between reductionism and anti-reductionism: it agrees with reductionism that testimonial justification is not sui generis, but agrees with antireductionism that testimonial justification is not constituted by positive reasons. The fifth paper turns from issues concerning communication to issues concerning our capacity to understand the world more generally. What does it take to understand why something is the case, for instance why the Tacoma Narrows Bridge collapsed? A common answer is that understanding why something is the case is a matter of knowing a fact about why it is the case. It is argued that if knowledge is stakes sensitive, this answer cannot be true, since understanding is not stakes sensitive.

  People who experience severe economic hardships sometimes consent to deals that many would not even consider. Examples include deals involving payment for sexual services, pregnancies, and kidney donations. Moreover, they may feel forced to accept deals on terms that few would accept. The term I will use for such morally challenging transactions is delicate deals. A feature of delicate deals is that even when they are entered into without fraud and coercion, many of us nevertheless find them objectionable. Much of the literature on delicate deals has been concerned with characterizing their bad-making features. The vulnerable party is forced by economic necessities to engage in harmful deals, exploited, and involved in a practice of wrongful commodification. Although this line of research is important, it is unfortunately insufficient: it fails to inform us about what we should do, all things considered. Hence, they leave open questions, such as whether we should prohibit delicate deals or regulate them, and if so, in what ways. The dissertation consists of two parts, an introduction and five papers. In paper 1, “The Bulldozing Fallacy,” coauthored with Ole Martin Moen, we argue that we need, when justifying prohibition of delicate deals, to avoid the bulldozing fallacy. This is the fallacy of believing that when people have a very narrow range of available options, we help them by taking away their preferred option in that range. To defend prohibition on grounds of the interest of the people engaging in the deal, one must be explicit about how removing the option will make them better. We propose six strategies for how to justify a ban that avoids the bulldozing fallacy. In paper 2, “The Ethics of Emergencies,” also coauthored with Moen, we address our obligations to people in difficult circumstances. We explore whether we have special duties of assistance in emergencies and whether they generalize to other cases of need outside of emergencies. We defend a novel account of our duties in emergencies and show that it can be reconciled with many plausible moral theories. In paper 3, “Sex Selection in India,” I address the issue of sex selection in India, a harmful and controversial practice that is caused by, and reinforces, gender discrimination. The Indian government has therefore banned the practice. Through a comparison between legal sex selection and its alternatives, I argue that the ban is unjustified because it makes the situation even worse for mothers and their daughters. In papers 4 and 5, I defend a model of kidney provision where governments are the sole buyer of kidneys and kidneys are distributed according to need. In paper 4, “Why States Should Buy Kidneys,” I explore Cécile Fabre’s principled objection to organ markets: that they allow duty bearers to profit from doing their duty. This criticism, I suggest, fails to distinguish between different duty bearers. I argue that, when the collective is the duty bearer, it is not wrong to be paid to perform a service that it would be your duty to perform were it not for the collectivization of duties. In paper 5, “Reframing Kidney Rewards,” I propose a new model for how to reward kidney donors. Many objections to kidney markets are rooted in the view that body parts are not ordinary market goods, and that the giving of a body part is an extraordinary act that is not properly valued through a market transaction. I show how framing a monetary reward differently makes a difference to its moral status, and that a prize is better able to reflect the extraordinary act of giving a body part compared to alternatives such as incentives, compensation or a competitive market price. In the introduction to this dissertation, I illustrate how this model can be used in other delicate deals.

  This doctoral thesis discusses one of the most symbolic works of 20th century architecture, the Modulor, an anthropometric measure and tool for architectural design, developed by Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier (1887-1965) during World War II, and promoted mainly through two books, Le Modulor (1950) and Modulor 2 (1955). Regardless its canonical status, the Modulor has long puzzled scholars and architects with its paradoxes and contradictions, appearing as a hybrid between a standard, a proportional system, a global measure, a corrective tool for design, and an autobiographical device at the hands of its creator. This thesis disassociates the Modulor from its allure and from Le Corbusier’s mythopoetic recounting. Instead, it reverses the argument and questions how this theoretical ambiguity was historically possible. The dissertation follows three intermingled levels of discourse. Firstly, a historical-biographical approach aiming to contextualize Le Corbusier’s agendas and activities relating to the Modulor. Secondly, the level of Le Corbusier’s contemporary theoretical schema regarding aesthetics, technicity, and philosophy. Thirdly, it approaches the material level of practice, represented by visuals, plans, drawings, technical details, geometrical diagrams, and measurements in buildings and paintings. Particularly, the thesis reveals the inception of the Modulor against a background of political, cultural, and philosophical context revolving around a psychophysical understanding of the human and esoteric theories of the golden section; an organicist and vitalist “human scale”; the normalization engineered by the Vichy regime; the reconstruction programmed by Vichy and the postwar French State; and the internationalism of the United Nations and American technological progress. By tracing the genealogy of the invention of the Modulor and following the process of its development, step by step, the thesis aims to synthesize the various layers of context and to flesh out the contradictions, ideologies, theories, and practices contained within one object. In sum, the thesis shows that above anything else, Le Corbusier’s Modulor is the containment of multitudes in a singular object; an attempt to create something that was practically impossible. The Modulor has also gathered concepts, influences, practices, and attitudes that Le Corbusier had cultivated in the four decades leading up to the Modulor. The measuring tool therefore contains all those aims and desires: benevolent and disturbing, reactionary and liberating, local and global, gendered and ambiguous, idealist and tangible, absolute and malleable, chaotic and ordered. This multitude renders the Modulor into something simultaneously rigid and porous—like a sponge.

  This thesis revolves around the question of how readers perceive structural unity in photobooks. The question is approached through attentive description and analysis of three contemporary American works – Collier Schorr’s Jens F. (2005), Nan Goldin’s Redheaded Peckerwood (1986) and Christian Patterson’s Redheaded Peckerwood (2011, 2012, 2013) – which all rely on journeys conducted by the photographers. The project is premised on a conception of the photobook as a network of interconnected nodes. A photobook network, the argument goes, is realized as a work of art when a reader combines the system’s components into a meaningful order. Given the photograph’s heterogeneity and ambiguity, there is, however, more than one valid way of ordering a photobook’s components. In order to approach a photobook’s higher level of meaning, readers are thus required to recombine and reread the work multiple times. As the photobook is inherently complex, readers are generally unable to explore every possible way of combining its components and hence each of the individual readings that constitute the network. Nevertheless, readers still recognize the photobook as a work of art, and thus as a structured unit. The thesis demonstrates that such perceptions of structural unity are enabled by patterns that provide the rereading process with predictability, which allows readers to imagine the nature of readings not yet conducted. This thesis also challenges the conception of the journey motif in contemporary photobooks as a manifestation of a turn towards the private self. By drawing attention to each photobook example’s particular pattern, it is demonstrated that the works allow for reflection on the subject’s extension into a physical, social and cultural realm, and thus for a relational conception of what it means to be human in the network age.
