  According to three plausible assumptions about well‐being, a person's welfare depends on (i) the valence of her experiences, (ii) the degree to which her life resonates with her, and (iii) the extent to which she fulfills her potential. Theories of well‐being have struggled to accommodate all three in a determinate manner. The difficulty can be framed as a dilemma: either jettison considered convictions, or sacrifice the clarity required for measurement and practical guidance. The aim of this article is to show that the three most influential theories are impaled by one of the horns in the dilemma, and diagnose the source of the problem.   Positive affect (PA) is operationalized differently across studies, leaving open whether distinct conceptualizations relate to subjective wellbeing (SWB) similarly over time. Although mainstream wellbeing theory treats PA and life satisfaction (LS) as components of a latent SWB factor, empirical findings on their causal relations remain inconsistent. This study examined whether pleasant versus energized PA show comparable longitudinal associations with LS using random-intercept cross-lagged panel models across nine waves from two national longitudinal datasets, PAIRFAM (N = 12,520) and LISS (N = 17,532). Both PA types showed consistent bidirectional associations with LS, but relationships were stronger for pleasant PA. Cross-lagged effects and time-specific residual correlations were approximately twice as large compared to energized PA. Pleasant and energized PA also differed in their associations with extraversion and neuroticism. These findings suggest that PA indicator choice affects SWB measure validity, with implications for positive psychology interventions targeting SWB.

  Many researchers oppose the hedonic idea that wellbeing can be reduced to the maximization of positive affect (PA) and the minimization of negative affect (NA). However, few studies have investigated alternative optimal levels of affects other than maximized PA and minimized NA. This paper examines ideal levels of PA and NA, and their alignment as an alternative approach to wellbeing. Study 1 investigates people’s ideal levels of affects. In a randomized forced-choice experiment (N = 352, U.S.-based), most participants rejected a life without NA and idealized experiencing 10-13% NA and 66-80% PA across experimental conditions and two selfreported measures. Study 2 (N = 638, international sample) examines whether life satisfaction corresponds more closely to affective alignment than to affective maximization. Using piecewise regression, we found that PA was consistently and positively associated with life satisfaction. Lower NA was associated with higher life satisfaction only among those experiencing more NA than desired. For those already below their ideal NA level, further reduction was no longer related to life satisfaction. Crucially, participants whose experienced and ideal affects were aligned reported the highest life satisfaction, instead of the group with highest hedonic experience. Overall, our findings suggest that individuals feel most satisfied when their experience aligns with their ideal, rather than when maximizing hedonic experience. Furthermore, the alignment is more linked to life satisfaction than to wisdom or personal growth. All in all, maximizing PA and minimizing NA are neither desired nor associated with the highest life satisfaction.

  Internalizing problems, including symptoms of anxiety and depression, are common in childhood and adolescence and are linked to adverse long-term outcomes. Although both child genetic variants and parental genetic influences contribute to these problems, the specific direct (child) and indirect (parental) genetic pathways involved remain unclear. We applied multi-polygenic score models using elastic net regression to identify key genetic predictors of depressive and anxiety symptoms at ages 8 and 14 in 9,314 parent–child trios from the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Cohort Study. We included 90 polygenic scores (PGSs) for the trio, along with their respective interaction terms. Predictive accuracy improved with age, with models explaining up to 2.7% of the variance in depression and 1.2% in anxiety. Key predictors included child attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, cognitive skills and well-being spectrum PGSs; maternal PGSs for smoking and cognitive skills; and paternal well-being spectrum PGSs. These findings underscore the value of incorporating diverse parental genetic traits to understand intergenerational risk transmission and developmental changes in child mental health.

  Understanding what constitutes a good life is central to psychological research, yet wellbeing models remain contested with respect to their structure and borders. We employ a network approach to investigate how wellbeing dimensions interrelate and whether they form distinct or overlapping constructs. Using a large, population-based sample from the European Social Survey (N = 45,122; 29 countries), we identified strong links between a broad range of wellbeing indicators across different theoretical domains. Community detection revealed six empirical clusters that partially align with existing distinctions (e.g. hedonic versus eudaimonic wellbeing). However, we also identified 11 indicators belonging to multiple clusters, demonstrating the fuzzy boundaries between wellbeing domains. These results highlight the need for integrative frameworks that better capture the interconnected nature of wellbeing. Our findings encourage more granular analyses and underscore the need for comprehensive measurement tools to advance wellbeing research, inform policy, and guide public health efforts.

  Adverse life events have been associated with increased mental illbeing and decreased wellbeing. These associations may partly reflect reverse causality and confounding genetics. Few studies have accounted for such effects, and few have compared the effect of adversities within and across different mental health outcomes. Our sample includes 1987 monozygotic and dizygotic twins born 1945-60, in the Norwegian Twin Registry, who responded to two questionnaires six years apart. We used biometric modelling to estimate genetic overlap and linear mixed models to control for previous levels of illbeing and wellbeing as well as genetic confounding in the associations between adverse life events and these outcomes. Our results indicate causal effects of cumulative adversity on increased illbeing and decreased wellbeing. Of the six adversities examined separately, financial strain and conflicts in romantic relationships showed the most profound effect on both outcomes. Conflicts with family/friends/neighbours and problems at work seem to primarily increase illbeing, while serious illness or injury mainly decrease wellbeing. This study supports previous findings that cumulative adversity represents a risk for increased illbeing and decreased wellbeing. Hence, exploring the number of recent adverse events could give valuable insight into individuals’ stressor load, and the reduction and prevention of such events should be important targets for preventive programs and policy. Importantly, our findings further suggest that the events that increase illbeing are not always overlapping with those that decrease wellbeing. This should be taken into consideration when assessing the needs of individuals after difficult experiences.

  In Republic book 9, Plato offers a puzzling argument suggesting that subjects can err even in their immediate self-ascriptions of pleasure. In this paper, I offer a detailed analysis and original interpretation of this argument, which I call the Deceptive Pleasure Argument. On the reading I defend here, Plato’s Socrates argues that pleasure is more than a feeling. The raw feel of the hedonic experience – the felt sense or feeling tone of our pleasure (that which enters awareness) – just partially constitutes a pleasure; in addition, it takes an underlying restorative process in which one of our physical or psychological needs is being met. In the absence of such an underlying restorative process, we are dealing with a case of deceptive pleasure or hedonic illusion akin to perceptual illusion. My reading does not just show that Plato’s views are more subtle and cogent than often appreciated, it also elucidates how the Deceptive Pleasure Argument mounts a powerful strike against the challenge posed by Socrates’s interlocutors.

  Previous research indicates that the significance of love varies considerably across cultures. In the present study, we introduce an often-overlooked cultural factor – religiosity – to explore its influence on the relationship between being in love and five dimensions of subjective well-being. We conducted two cross-cultural studies with 31,608 participants from 117 samples across 83 societies. Our findings reveal that, in more religious cultures, being in love is a weaker predictor of well-being compared to more secular cultures in four out of six models. These findings indicate that national context influences the relative importance of various emotions and experiences for well-being, underscoring the need to account for cultural context in research on love.

  Wellbeing is shaped by an interplay of genetic and environmental factors and is associated with both health and functioning. It remains unclear whether genetic influences on wellbeing are linked to brain structure and, in turn, early-life psychopathology. Here, we investigated associations between wellbeing polygenic scores (PGS), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-derived measures of brain structure, and parent-reported measures of child psychopathology in a large cross-sectional sample of children from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study (n = 8844; 8.9–11.0 years old). Preregistered analyses revealed no significant associations between wellbeing PGS and regional cortical thickness or subcortical volumes and only a small negative association with surface area of the parahippocampal cortex (β = −0.03, p = .002), while an exploratory analysis identified a small positive association with intracranial volume (ICV; β = 0.04, p < .001). Preregistered analyses showed small negative associations between wellbeing PGS and general psychopathology (β = −0.09, p < .001) and both internalizing (β = −0.09, p < .001) and externalizing problems (β = −0.07, p < .001). ICV partially mediated the relationships between wellbeing PGS and psychopathology, accounting for 1.3–3.3 % of these relationships. The findings suggest that while wellbeing PGS have limited associations with regional brain structure in children, they exhibit small protective effects against psychopathology.

  Purpose Motherhood affects women’s mental health, encompassing aspects of both wellbeing and illbeing. This study investigated stability and change in wellbeing (i.e., relationship satisfaction and positive affect) and illbeing (i.e., depressive and anxiety symptoms) from pregnancy to three years postpartum. We further investigated the mutual and dynamic relations between these constructs over time and the role of genetic propensities in their time-invariant stability. Data and methods This four-wave longitudinal study included 83,124 women from the Norwegian Mother, Father, and Child Cohort Study (MoBa) linked to the Medical Birth Registry of Norway. Data were collected during pregnancy (30 weeks) and at 6, 18 and 36 months postpartum. Wellbeing and illbeing were based on the Relationship Satisfaction Scale, the Differential Emotions Scale and Hopkins Symptoms Checklist-8. Genetics were measured by the wellbeing spectrum polygenic index. Analyses were based on random intercept cross-lagged panel models using R. Results All four outcomes showed high stability and were mutually interconnected over time, with abundant cross-lagged predictions. The period of greatest instability was from pregnancy to 6 months postpartum, followed by increasing stability. Prenatal relationship satisfaction played a crucial role in maternal mental health postpartum. Women’s genetic propensity to wellbeing contributed to time-invariant stability of all four constructs. Conclusion Understanding the mutual relationship between different aspects of wellbeing and illbeing allows for identifying potential targets for health promotion interventions. Time-invariant stability was partially explained by genetics. Maternal wellbeing and illbeing develop in an interdependent way from pregnancy to 36 months postpartum.

  The tyrannical personality plays a central role in Republic 9’s attempt to establish that only the just person—whose soul is healthy, integrated, and harmonious—lives a genuinely happy life. In the first apodeixis, Plato argues that the tyrannical soul is marked by fragmentation and disintegration, producing pervasive negative affect—grief, paranoia, regret—and depriving the person of inner freedom and autonomy. The second, and especially the third, apodeixisadvance a more radical thesis: that the tyrant’s pleasures are qualitatively inferior to the fully integrated, fully actualized agent. As Socrates puts it (587b9–10), “the tyrant will inevitably live most unpleasantly (ἀηδέστατα) and the king most pleasantly (ἥδιστα).” Yet this proposal has received strikingly little sustained analysis in the literature. In this paper, I offer a detailed and original interpretation of the claim and elucidate how it contributes to the Republic’s overarching argument. Toward the end of the third apodeixis, Socrates describes tyrannical pleasures as “untrue,” “spurious,” a “fake” or “simulacrum” of the real thing—“three times removed from true pleasure”—and comparable to a two-dimensional “plane figure” rather than a three-dimensional “solid figure.” Earlier, he had compared such pleasures to “trompe l’oeil paintings.” Tyrannical pleasures are inferior, I argue, because they are false or deceptive (pseudēs). The idea here, I suggest, is that these deceptive pleasureslack depth: they present an attractive phenomenal surface—at least from the blurry perspective of the tyrant—but fail to correspond appropriately to deeper, real features of the world. I consider several ways of fleshing out this notion of hedonic depth. Drawing on a stretch of argumentation developed earlier in the third apodeixis (583b1 – 585a7), I then suggest that the tyrant’s so-called pleasuresamount to nothing more than temporary relief from the pain his psychic disorder generates. They are not intrinsic or substantial pleasures at all, but fakes masquerading as their genuine counterparts. Tragically, the tyrant is in no position to recognize the impoverished quality of his affective life. He takes himself to be well of, hedonically speaking, but he is not. As the limiting case of psychological fragmentation, he suffers from two failures of rationality that explain why he is a stranger to himself when it comes to his pleasures. First, his conception of what counts as pleasure has progressively narrowed: due to a loss of discriminative capacity, he is no longer able to access what is genuinely rewarding or satisfying. Second, because his personality has been hijacked by the lowest part of the psyche, the power of logismos—the capacity to detect and reject false or misleading appearances—can no longer perform its proper function. This reading neatly explains why Plato calls the third apodeixis the “strongest and most decisive (μέγιστόν τε καὶ κυριώτατον, 583b6–7)” response to Thrasymachus’s challenge. If the tyrannical personality is deeply mistaken about his own hedonic experiences, then the hedonic basis for Thrasymachus’s flirtations with tyranny collapses: what he takes to be the most pleasant life is, in truth, less than fully pleasant.

  Are moral and prosocial people also happier in everyday life? Existing research is mixed: endorsing prosocial values is often linked to higher well-being, yet acting to help others can entail personal costs in the moment. One reason may be that most studies examine values rather than daily value-consistent behaviour, and rarely distinguish between momentary and longer-term well-being. We address these gaps using ecological momentary assessment data from more than 10,000 adults (120 beeps in total per person). At baseline, participants reported their moral and prosocial values. During the assessment period, they received four prompts per day asking whether they had (a) acted like a good, moral person and (b) taken care of or helped someone, alongside a broad set of well-being indicators (e.g., positive emotions, negative emotions, life satisfaction, meaning, social well-being, engagement). This design allows us to quantify the extent to which people behave in line with their values across days, and to link both values and daily behaviour as well as value–behaviour congruence to momentary and long-term well-being. Ongoing analyses will clarify when, and for whom, “being good” is associated with “feeling good”.

  Introduction The global rise in mental health problems and compromised wellbeing highlights the need for scalable and cost-effective wellbeing interventions. The Five Ways to Wellbeing for All (5waysA) is a digital adaptation of the UK’s Five Ways to Wellbeing framework, promoting wellbeing through five activity domains: connect, be active, take notice, keep learning, and give. Delivered via two webinars and SMS reminders over ten weeks, the 5waysA program aims to enhance wellbeing and reduce psychological distress in the general population. Methods A large-scale randomized controlled trial (N = 969) and subsequent secondary analyses were conducted in Norway. Self-reported life satisfaction, flourishing, positive emotions, anxiety, and depression were assessed pre-, mid-, and post-intervention. Analyses included multilevel modeling, mediation analysis, and network intervention analysis (NIA). A 12-month follow-up study with synthetic control comparison examined long-term effects. Findings Compared to waiting-list controls, participants in the intervention group reported significantly greater improvements in wellbeing (life satisfaction, flourishing, positive emotions) and reductions in anxiety and depressive symptoms (Cohen’s d = 0.20–0.49), with larger effects among those with most pre-intervention symptoms. Mediation analyses indicated that engagement in the Five Ways activities partially explained these effects, with a clear dose–response relationship between activity engagement and wellbeing outcomes. NIA revealed that increased positive emotions represented the main direct pathway, linking the intervention to improved wellbeing. Long-term follow-up demonstrated sustained gains in life satisfaction at 12 months (d = 0.28), exceeding simulated population-level controls (d = 0.17). Conclusions The 5waysA program effectively promotes wellbeing and reduces distress through accessible, evidence-based activities. Its digital, low-cost format, and durable effects make it a promising large-scale strategy for population-level mental health promotion and positive psychological functioning.

  Mennesket har alltid drømt om å bli lykkelig og vitenskapen forstår stadig mer av hva et godt liv innebærer. Den viktigste innsikten handler om hvor ultrasosiale vi er og hvor viktig omsorg, samarbeid og moral er for alt det vi kan kalle menneskelig. I dag vet vi at ideen om mennesket som en selvsentrert individualist i stadig konkurranse med andre er en lykketyv som hindrer verdifulle opplevelser, menneskelig utfoldelse og frihet. Det vi derimot trenger for å kunne leve et godt liv er stabilitet, et ønske om å bli et bedre menneske og omsorg for hverandre.
