The Tache as a Sign in Nineteenth-Century Painting.

The tache (blot, patch, stain) is a central and recurring motif in visual art, at least from the time of Manet (whose rejection of academic finish produced a surface where the strokes of paint are presented, directly, as patches or blots, then indirectly as legible signs). The potential range of works to be discussed is enormous: the blots of Alexander Cozens; the dots of Seurat and the neo-impressionists; the passages of Cézanne, and the color areas of Matisse; the emergency of an aesthetic of the informe in Surrealism, and later in art brut (Fautrier, Dubuffet) and in Jackson Pollock. Each manifestation of tache-ism generates its own specific cultural effects, and the project intends to ‘read’ each instance closely in the art of Manet, Cézanne, Seurat, Munch, and Matisse. Nevertheless, there is surely something like a shared aesthetic operation that runs across these diverse regions, and this research project focuses for the first time on the tache as a hidden continuum within modern art (1860-1900).
In its methodological framework, drawn from the semiotics of text and image, the project introduces fine-tuning into the classic terms index, symbol, icon. The concept of the tache as a ‘crossing’ of sign-types enables finer distinctions and observations than have been available so far within the Peircean tradition. Since the claim for the tache is that it ‘crosses’ sign-types, the discussion opens on to the whole terrain of interaction between visual art, literature, and philosophy.
