Get involved

As an open, interdisciplinary platform we are always thinking up new ways to collaborate and bring people into the work we do.

Here are some of the ways you can currently get involved in OCEH.

NOTE: If you are contacting us about any of these, please use the standard contact email address which goes out to the whole team.

Give a talk

Would you like to give a talk to the OCEH community? We host two types of talks in the Lab:

  • Lunch seminars are shorter, informal presentations that take place in the OCEH Lab, usually from 12.15 to 13.00. Presentations may be on academic and non-academic subjects and we try to keep them to about 20-25 minutes in length, to leave time for discussion afterwards.
  • Lab talks are longer, academic talks, usually from 12.15-14.00—giving more room both for the presentation itself and for subsequent discussion. These talks mainly take place in the Lab, though sometimes we book a room elsewhere in the University or host them online.

Lunch seminars and Lab talks are both open to the public, and we welcome resident and visiting speakers alike. We are also open to hybrid and online-only events. Contact us with the topic for your talk and we'll sort out the details.

Organize an event

Are you organizing an event at (or involving) the University of Oslo that you think might be relevant to the OCEH community—or do you want to organize one?

We can help support and disseminate your event, connect you to other scholars in the OCEH community and, in some cases, provide supplementary funding—for example to help cover travel or hotel fees, to extend the stay of a visitor or organize additional events.

Become affiliated

OCEH is a growing community of scholars. If you are based at the University of Oslo but not currently part of an OCEH research collaboration, we offer two routes for affiliation.

  • Individual scholars with a relevant research profile can apply to join OCEH as affiliated researchers: simply fill out the form here. Affiliated researchers are listed on the OCEH website.
  • Investigators managing a humanities-led environmental research project at UiO can contact us to submit their project to us for affiliation. Affiliated projects are listed on the OCEH site and we display their events in a dedicated feed.

Join as a visiting scholar

We welcome visiting researchers and scholars working on environmental humanities topics for shorter or longer stays.

  • If you are an environmental humanities scholar not currently based at the University of Oslo, but would like to visit for a shorter or longer research stay, get in touch. Academic visitors at UiO must be formally hosted by a department: we are not a department, but we can assist you and help put you in touch with a suitable potential host. Once you have a "proper" formal host, we can also offer you affiliation and access to the OCEH community.
  • If you are already in Oslo, as an academic visitor or guest of a UiO department, affiliation is simple. We will invite you to the Lab for an informal meeting and discuss what your stay as a visiting scholar at OCEH might involve.

In both cases, a conversation with the team is always the first step. Decisions about affiliation with OCEH are made by the whole team.

Note: While we welcome and support visiting scholars, we are not currently able to fund research stays. You will need your own funding to come to Oslo.

Apply for a bursary

Are you an environmental humanities scholar at UiO in need of funds to present your research to a wider public? We offer a limited number of small bursaries to support the dissemination of environmental humanities research carried out at UiO, for example to cover conference travel and registration fees.

The bursaries are open to all scholars in the Faculty of Humanities working on relevant topics, with the particular aim of supporting early career researchers and scholars on fixed-term contracts who may not have independent research budgets.

Send us a short description of your research and where you are presenting it, and an overview of your needs (up to 10 000 NOK), and we will discuss your request at our next team meeting. In return we will normally ask that you present your research back to the OCEH community, for example by giving a lunch talk or writing a conference report for the OCEH blog.

Apply for research funding

OCEH has entered the final phase of its funding period. No further calls for research funding are currently planned.

You can read our past calls here and check out the current OCEH research teams here.

Write us into a grant

Are you currently based at UiO and developing a funding proposal for a humanities-led environmental research project you think would be relevant to OCEH? Get in touch, we will set up an informal meeting with the team about your project and how you might involve us.

If you are not currently based at UiO, but would like to come and work here, note that OCEH is itself sadly not able to host externally funded projects. In order to base your funding proposal at UiO you will need the approval of a department or institute that agrees to serve as the host. We are happy to set up a meeting with you to discuss your plans and see if we can assist.

If you are looking to partner with OCEH or involve us as collaborators in a project or grant proposal, we are happy to hear from you. Contact us and we'll set up a meeting to discuss your ideas. Keep in mind however that the core OCEH team is small, our time and resources are limited, and that we are primarily a research platform.

Finally, if you are looking for potential grant partners at UiO we can help facilitate contact to our network of environmental humanities researchers and projects at the University.

Note: A discussion with the team is always the first step. Please do not write us into grants or proposals before we have had a chance to talk to you.

Other ideas?

Get in touch! We're open to suggestions and always happy to hear from people who are interested in what we do.
