Lab internships
As an intern at the Socio-Cognitive Lab, you will gain practical skills and knowledge relevant to experimental research with human participants.
You may:
- Gain insight into methods and equipment such as EEG, eye-tracking, and behavioural testing.
- Learn to use experimental software for building studies, running experiments, exporting data, and basic data analysis.
- Support the lab team with day-to-day tasks, including equipment maintenance, troubleshooting, and purchasing.
- Contribute to ongoing research projects at the Department of Linguistics and Scandinavian Studies; project topics vary.
- Participate in weekly and monthly lab meetings.
How to become a lab intern
If you are interested in becoming a lab intern, please get in touch with the lab team. We accept interns on an ongoing basis.
Internship guidelines for researchers
Lab internships should be mutually beneficial. Interns contribute to tasks such as participant recruitment, testing, and data processing, while researchers provide training and insight into research design, methods, and research practice.
At the beginning of the internship:
- Meet with the intern to agree on their role, responsibilities, and tasks in the project.
- Clarify expected working hours, and relevant project deadlines.
- Discuss if and how the intern’s contribution will be acknowledged in publications, presentations, or other outputs, where applicable.
Training and supervision
- Introduce the study’s aims, methods, and procedures.
- Ensure that interns have the skills and knowledge required for their assigned tasks, and arrange relevant training where needed.
- For participant testing, provide clear step-by-step protocols.
- Ensure that interns understand relevant ethical guidelines and procedures for handling sensitive information.
- Schedule regular meetings to review progress, answer questions, and provide feedback.
Support learning and knowledge sharing
- Explain relevant aspects of study design, data analysis, and interpretation.
- Include interns in relevant research-team meetings where appropriate.
- Share literature and other resources that help the intern understand the project and its wider research context.
Addressing challenges
If questions, concerns, or conflicts arise, researchers and interns may contact the lab manager, lab engineer, or ILN’s safety representative for guidance.
