  Nordlands Beskrivelseav Petter Dass (også kjend som Nordlands Trompet, skriven mellom 1670 og 1700, utgjeven i 1739) vart oppfatta både som poesi og naturhistorie av dei fyrste lesarane av boka. Men i norsk litteraturhistorie har den naturhistoriske komponenten vorte underkommunisert. Korleis skjedde det? I denne artikkelen peikar eg på to grunnar: J.S. Welhavens definering av verket som folkedikting og måten termen «barokk» har vorte bruka på i norsk litteraturhistoriografi. I denne samanhengen undersøkjer eg resepsjonen av Nordlands Beskrivelse i litteraturhistorier frå dei siste hundre åra. Til slutt vil eg prøve å nærme meg den historiske kommunikasjons-situasjonen for Nordlands Beskrivelse. Her viser eg òg korleis Dass brukar det poetiske språket til å uttrykkje naturhistorisk kunnskap.

  Over the past fifteen years, research on Petter Dass has provided a new view of the poet vicar, in contrast to earlier research based on a national and regional building program. But the new research has, ironically, also led to a narrow view of Petter Dass. This has happened on the one side through a rhetorical method, and on the other, through a class-oriented reading method. The author shows how these methods do not succeed in capturing the uniqueness of Dass’s poetry, such as literary originality and a modern view of science. He does this by gaining insights from New Historicism and pointing to a restrictive view of the exercise of power in the early modern period by these two literary methods.
