  I denne artikkelen undersøker jeg hvordan «selvet» tematiseres i August Strindbergs naturalistiske verk fra 1880- og 1890-tallet så vel som i dramaet Ett drömspel etter århundreskiftet. Med nedslag i dramaet Fadren og novellene «Samvetskval» og «Silverträsket» og i dialog med Gilles Deleuze og Félix Guattaris maskiniske forståelse av selvet utforsker jeg i artikkelen hvordan Strindberg skildrer en «selvets mekanikk» preget av samspillet mellom ytre sosiale reguleringer og indre psykologiske krefter, som konstituerer det borgerlige subjektet. Videre viser artikkelen hvordan Strindbergs oppmålinger av «jegets» uavklarte koordinater og kartlegginger av selvets fluktuerende bevegelser mellom begrensning og utvidelse videreføres i Ett drömspel. I artikkelen fremmer jeg påstanden at dramaet ikke utelukkende tematiserer transcendenslengsel slik en viss tendens i Strindberg-forskningen legger opp til, men heller en lengsel etter immanente forandringer av selvets og jegets mulighets- og bevegelsesrom, som er tett forbundet med sosioøkonomiske spørsmål.

  This paper – originally delivered at the 21st International Strindberg-Conference in Göttingen in may 2019 and published in the conference anthology "August Strindberg und die Aufklärung" at Königshausen & Neumann, Würzburg in 2020 – seeks to investigate the indirect and direct reactions of August Strindbergs writing to Immanuel Kants limitation of the human subjective faculty of reason and understanding in the Kritik der reinen Vernunft (Critique of Pure Reason) (1781/87). Throughout his life and work, Strindbergs investigates questions of subjectivity and the limitations of the self and subjecthood, and can in this context be viewed as taking an anti- enlightenment stance. By doing a media-aesthetic reading of Strindberg’s Ett drömspel (A Dream Play) (1902) in light of the abovementioned questions, this paper hopes to show how Strindberg throughout his work searches for ways to expand the self and escape the “shell of subjectivity”. Especially Strindbergs Antibarbarus (1894) questions the human capacity of vision as flawed and limitating, by undertaking a physiological examination of the sense of vision, and thereby underlining the limitations and the following lack of connection to an interconnected, immanent metaphysical sphere – which after Kant and the following positivism and atomism in the natural sciences seems to have been lost.

  This paper explores the afterlives of German Naturphilosophie, and its experimental theories of magnetism and electricity around 1800, in Scandinavia. I will focus on the intense collaboration and experimentation between Danish physicist Hans Christian Ørstedt (1777-1851) and German physicist and romantic philosopher Johann Wilhelm Ritter (1776-1810) in Jena in 1802. Ritter’s influence would proof instrumental in Ørstedt’s later discoveries of the interrelation between magnetism and electricity, preparing the ground for the development of the electric telegraph. A central figure in the so called “Danish golden age”, Ørstedt had close connections to the literary and cultural establishment of his time, ranging from writer Hans Christian Andersen to poet Adam Oehlenschläger. The role of the rapid technological and scientific developments in electrical communication infrastructures, especially by way of the electrical telegraph, in the so called “Nyromantikk” in Scandinavia, has in recent times received increased scholarly attention. Writers such as Hamsun, Obstfelder and others employed recurring poetic and aesthetic metaphors that established analogies between electricity, technological media like the telegraph and the human nervous system. In light of this, this paper hopes to address and to some degree differentiate prevailing established dichotomies in modernist studies, between the technological and the natural, i.e., a disenchantment of nature in light of increased urbanization, rapid technological developments and an instrumental relationship to nature. By highlighting the origins of epistemes of electricity in romantic Naturphilosophie around 1800 via Ørstedt and Ritter, I hope to address both a lesser known developmental vector infusing the genealogy of the Scandinavian “Nervenromantik” around 1900, as well as underline the complex relation between the spheres of “nature” and “technology” infusing this “origin”.

  Around 1800, a plethora of epistemological and physiological theories and discoveries contest and differentiate the primacy of “conscious” conceptual synthesis postulated by Kantian transcendental philosophy: Rather than taking the spontaneity of the self-identical subject of the transcendental apperception posited by Kant, as its epistemological point of departure, the aforementioned theories, I argue, implicitly highlight the existence of an unconscious perceptive field, occupying a strangely liminal position between objectivity and subjectivity, between conscious and unconscious processes. This paper will take Salomon Maimon’s critique of Kantian transcendental philosophy in his treatise “Versuch über die Transzendentalphilosophie” (1790) as a point of departure: Maimon, I argue following Gilles Deleuze, is the first to radicalize the consequences of an unconscious, psychic automatism of perception as the constitutive ground of conscious conceptual synthesis. Goethe’s “Theory of Color” (“Zur Farbenlehre”, 1810), especially its first chapter concerning the physiology of color (“Physiologische Farben”), provides, I argue, a physiologically situated theory of vision that further differentiates Maimon’s claim. Goethe’s inquiry into entoptic phenomena discovers a sphere of “pure perceptual events”, i.e., unconscious and physiologically grounded differential mechanisms that precede the synthesis of recognition of clearly delineated figures and objects. Physician Johann Christian Reil, a key-figure in “romantic psychology”, proposes a physiological grounded, proto-“neuronal” theory of mental illnesses and their cure in Rhapsodieen über die Anwendung der psychischen Curmethode auf Geisteszerrüttungen (1803): For Reil, the possibility of mental disorder lies in the very physiological, i.e., neuronal constitution of consciousness. This papers overarching goal is thus to highlight and explicate the philosophical and natural scientific vectors infusing a “differential”, perceptual unconscious, foreshadowing both the psychophysical conception of a “perceptive threshold”, as well as of subsequent psychoanalytical theories of a “Reizschutz”.

  Bidrag til Bokvennen litterær avis (BLA) spalte "Anbefalt": Fra Biedermeier til Neue Sachlichkeit: Om to kaktus-bilder hos henholdsvis Carl Spitzweg og Georg Scholz. Bare se, ikke røre Carl Spitzwegs (1808-1885) bilde Kaktus-entusiasten (ca. 1855) viser en spissborgerlig kontorist som, innhyllet i et gemyttlig ettermiddagslys, betrakter sin samling kaktusplanter i dagdrømmersk, nærmest kjærlig kontemplasjon. Etter rekken av mislykkede revolusjoner (1789, 1830, 1848) har Biedermeier-epokens politiske desillusjon en tilbaketrekning til privatlivet og ens egne fire vegger som følge – en tendens som finner sitt emblematiske uttrykk i den omhyggelige pleien av dilettantiske hobbyprosjekter – boksamling, filateli, oppspiddning av sommerfugler, eller å avle eksotiske planter i de tusen veksthus som har funnet veien inn i parsellerte hager (et Krystallpalass en miniature?). Før den siste rest av borgerskapets drømmer riktignok stivner i florale tapeter og smijernsroser noen snaue tiår senere, er de, i Spitzwegs maleri, i det minste fortsatt forunt et kroppslig tilfluktssted – selv om også kaktusen forviser betrakterens taktile lengsler til å måte nøye seg med en ren retinal nytelse. Og ser ikke den lutryggede, skallede statstjeneren, i sin flaskegrønne frakk, selv litt ut som en kaktus? Også han en nærsynt inneplante, som kun bereiser verden på papiret – med stjålne blikk på kaktussamlingen i vinduet som eneste tillatte eksotiske utskeielse. I salgslisten noterte Spitzweg «Staatshämorrhoidarius» ved siden av bildet – den stillesittende statstjenerens proktologiske yrkessykdom. Å sette seg på sin piggete plantevenn ville ha avstedkommet lignende symptomer. I Georg Scholz’ (1890-1945) «Kaktus-Stillleben med blekkhus og armbåndsur» (1926) har Biedermeier-gemyttligheten, snaue 70 år senere, veket for en Neue Sachlichkeits (sosial)realisme: Snarere enn en blott eksotisme er den karrige kaktusens kjennetegn nå at den er billig i drift og lar seg avle også på ørsmå bohem- eller arbeiderværelser. I samme ånd kan man i 1927 lese i det sosialdemokratiske tidsskriftet „Die Bühne», hvordan kaktusvekster overbeviser med sin kravløshet, seighet og langlevelighet, og – ikke minst – med sin «nærmest rørende beskjedenhet». Desillusjonen har økt i takt med inderlighetens minkende omkrets: Biedermeierens romslige kontor og veksthus har krympet til proletariatets vinduskarm. I september 1930 bemerker avisen «Der Tag» hvordan «åsynet av kaktusene stemmer overens med oss selv, med vår samtid (…). I stakkarslige tider blir menneskene piggete i sitt humør, (og) groteske i sine tanker.»

Det samme gjelder Faldbakkens billedkunstneriske praksis, som er preget av en flakkende dobbel-optikk, mellom tvangssyn og villet blikkformørkelse, i spenningsfeltet mellom ikonofili og ikonoklasme, mellom billedkult og billedstormeri, kort sagt: mellom senkapitalismens spetakkel og «spektakulær negasjon» . En «seig, paralyserende forakt mot konsum-livet i aller videste forstand, blandet med en (nesten) like dyp fascinasjon» understreker Faldbakken selv som ett av kunstnerskapets Leitmotiver. Allerede i romantrilogien Skandinavisk Misantropi (2001–2008) gjennomdeklinerte Faldbakken et mangfoldig arsenal av antagonismer, motstandsposisjoner og overskridelseslogikker, via topoi av pornografi, pedofili, vold, ekstremisme og dop, som til syvende og sist bare bekreftet motstandens umulighet konfrontert med kapitalismens altfortærende og reifiserende aksiomatikk. (...) (S)elv om «kritikken» nå fremmes i en mer finurlig og finstemt språkdrakt, lar det seg identifisere idémessige linjer med opphav i Misantropiens «mørke hjerte», som slynger seg like mye rundt Barnedamens forstemmende velproporsjonerte figur i "The Hills", som rundt "Vi er fems" uregjerlige leirklump, før de fortetter seg til Utskildes frenetiske viltbarn-syntaks i "Stakkars" sluttmonolog.

  This thesis reads Goethe’s Die Wahlverwandtschaften (1809) as an experimental arrangement in which sociohistorical, epistemological and media-technological developments around 1800 are staged, finding its nexus in the “borderline-case” of the novel’s main theme of love: The conception of love around 1800 is marked by the emergence of an “imaginary” sociability, as well as “romantic data-processing” – in the way it reacts to the aporias inherent to the representational, aesthetic qua media technological status quo of its time. In theoretical dialogue with Niklas Luhmann’s system-theoretical perspectives and Friedrich Kittler’s psychoanalytically infused media-theory, this thesis takes on a post-hermeneutic approach, focusing on the historically situated material, medial and institutional structures that partake in the constitution of the novel’s characters as enamored subjects around 1800. In analyzing key scenes of the novel in which the tension between the imagination and the empirical real are staged with regard to a plethora of media-technological dispositifs, as well as to the discussion of artistic representational strategies, I argue, that these extra-romantic scenes in the novel equally find their intersection in the theme of love: Love, around 1800, the novel shows, is radically transformed by changing institutional and media-technological structures and techniques. In reading the novel as an experimental arrangement on not only a thematic and motivic, but also formal level, I show, how the novel itself attempts to “think” and stage both the historical vectors that inform its theme of romantic love and epistemic positions, as well as the representational aporias of the medium of literature. I aim to show how the novel’s formal descriptive modes and its formal characterizations of its characters pertain to central parameters and media-technological aporias of around 1800, and how they find their intersection in the constitution of love. In my view, Die Wahlverwandtschaften makes up a “laboratory of modernity”, staging the aporetic tensions and negotiations that infuse the constitution of modern, loving subjects. Overarchingly, I aim to show, how the emergence of the nuclear family and a remodeled institution of marriage in the transition to functional society marks a new pedagogical and anthropological site for the inscription of novel pathways in which desire circulates: Following the Enlightenment’s (reform-pedagogy’s) implicit goal of ridding the human of natural, animal carnal desires, love is being spiritualized and disembodied. It is this development of love becoming tied to the imagination and the tension between an “ideal of the beloved” and the empirical bodily individual of the loved, that I argue infuse the plethora of media-technological, epistemological and representational questions and aporias the novel thematizes, and which this thesis aims to explore as structurally relevant to a radically new functioning of love around 1800.

  Denne oppgaven undersøker, hvilken rolle det mediale og medialitet har i August Strindbergs verk, samt hvordan disse har formet hans subjektforståelse, naturfilosofi, og estetiske tilnærming. August Strindbergs verk og tanke er preget av en stor heterogenitet når det gjelder innhold, sjanger og medium – et faktum som, til tross for Strindbergs status som kanonisert banebrytende modernistisk dramatiker har ført til, at Strindberg-forskningen er like spredt som førstnevntes verk og idéunivers. Denne oppgaven forsøker følgelig – i dialog med tenkere som Gilles Deleuze og G. W. Leibniz – å utlede en helhetlig poetikk på bakgrunn av nettopp det mediale i Strindbergs skjønnlitterære, naturvitenskapelige, medieestetiske og billedkunstneriske verk og praksis – som så etterprøves ved eksempelet av dramaet "Ett drömspel" (1902). Oppgaven forsøker å vise, hvordan det mediale i Strindbergs poetikk evner å overvinne og forene en rekke av dualistiske motsetninger, mellom kropp og sjel, subjekt og objekt, skaper og verk, fiksjon og virkelighet, og realitet og virtualitet til fordel for mer flytende, bevegelige, transitive forståelser – som allikevel forblir i en guddommelig metafysisk sammenheng.
