Screen Cultures workshops

Four open seminars discussing works-in-progress.

Time: Feb. 7, 2020 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM

Throughout 2020, Screen Cultures will host four 2-hour workshops discussing work-in-progress pertaining to our field. Our goal is to get to know, and provide feedback on, each other’s writing, in a forum where everyone can contribute.

Workshops are open to anyone wishing to attend; advance registration is required. Since the format necessitates active participation, all in attendance will need to read the texts up for discussion. Texts will be circulated a week before the session.

The workshops are hosted by the Media Aesthetics seminar.

Our first workshop will take place on February 7th.

Steffen Krüger will use the opportunity to dust off his pet project with the working title "Instagram, plasticity and mental health - the persistent question of narcissism in social media".

The following dates are: 3 April, 4 September, and 6 November 2020.

Screen Cultures Lecture Series

The Screen Cultures public lecture series aims to generate conversations about how screens – of all types – shape our understanding of, and interactions with, the world. Internationally recognized experts deliver the lectures. Like screens themselves, the Screen Cultures public lecture series is for everyone.

Living in a mobile world: The culture and economy of apps

Screen Cultures is delighted to welcome Dr. Anne Helmond (University of Amsterdam) as our first guest speaker in a series of public lectures this spring.

Time and place: Feb. 20, 2020 2:15 PM – 3:30 PM, Eilert Sundts hus, A-blokka: Auditorium 7

In 2019, the average user spent 3.7 hours on their mobile, signifying how deeply our mobile devices have become interwoven into our daily lives and practices. Smartphones have become a key – if not primary – interface to interact with the world around us. At the same time we carry around ‘smart’ data collection devices that are continuously aggregating data about our location, activities, and app usage. This lecture outlines how we can study social and cultural phenomena through the lens of app stores and how we can examine data flows between app user interfaces and third parties. Ultimately, the app store is seen as an interface highlighting cultural practices and the app as an interface connecting users, their practices, and data to various third-party platforms and databases.

The Age of Surveillance Capitalism

A conversation with Professor Shoshana Zuboff

Time and place: Oct. 22, 2020 7:00 PM – 8:20 PM, Litteraturhuset

The hidden and increasingly sophisticated use of our data has not solely contributed to personalized content and microtargeted advertising. Rather it has become a tool to predict and modify our behaviour as individuals and citizens. As “behavioural future markets” continue to expand, surveillance capitalism is shaping a new digital future with the potential to destabilise our economies, democracies and ourselves.

Shoshana Zuboff is the Charles Edward Wilson Professor Emerita at Harvard Business School and a former Faculty Associate at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society at Harvard Law School. She is the author of three books. Her most recent publication The Age of Surveillance Capitalism:  The Fight for a Human Future at the New Frontier of Power has recently been published in Norwegian.

In association with Spartacus, The Department of Criminology and Sociology of Law, and the Freedom of Expression Commission, Screen Cultures is delighted to welcome Professor Shoshana Zuboff (Harvard University) as she joins Mareile Kaufman (IKRS/UiO) in conversation about the pervasiveness of surveillance capitalism.

Tickets will be made available on Litteraturhuset's webpage on Sunday the 18th of October. The event will also be streamed on YouTube.
