About the seminar
The post-digital condition (Cramer, 2015) is defined by digital normativity but also by reactions against such normativity. In a world shaped by connectivity excess and algorithmic abundance, what does it mean to choose less – or to choose differently?
These two talks explore how creativity and meaning emerge not from limitless digital possibility, but through deliberate – and socially powerful – acts of curation and constraint.
Curated creativity: Music technologies in post-digital times
In today’s post-digital world, digital tools offer more choices than ever – often turning browsing into an activity of its own. To foster creativity and focus, designers are realising the necessity to limit available features, a strategy that contrasts with the long-standing “more is more” ethos of digital innovation. Electronic music production is a striking example.
In this seminar, Claes Thorén explores how creativity sometimes needs technological constraints – for both designers rethinking how tools are built, and the musicians seeking new ways to express themselves.
Humble things? The social (in)significance of physical books in the curated workplace
Material objects are indispensable in workplace curation and can be deliberately used by office designers to create place identity as well as social belonging.
Focusing on multiple meanings of physical books in coworking spaces – including their function as non-digital props and disconnection nudges – Karin Fast exposes the ‘material culture’ (Miller, 1997) of the post-digital (workplace) as well as the intricate web of values, tastes and lifestyles it reflects.
The time and date is October 23, 13.00 - 14.00 (Norway time, CEST).
