This interactive workshop supports PhD candidates in reflecting on career as part of building a meaningful and sustainable life. Many doctoral researchers focus narrowly on an academic career path, often without fully exploring their values, transferable competences, or the working conditions in which they are most likely to thrive. At the same time, stress and reduced well-being are increasingly common across PhD cohorts.
The workshop combines short inputs with guided reflection and practical exercises in values clarification, motivation, and competence mapping. Participants will identify skills developed through PhD work that are often under-recognised, reflect on personal values and life priorities.
The aim is not to steer PhD candidates away from academia, but to increase self-awareness, agency, and resilience—enabling more informed, realistic, and sustainable career choices.
Adine Dørum works with career development for early career researchers, supporting them in competence mapping, professional reflection, and values-based career choices. She is an experienced career counsellor with extensive experience in career guidance for adults and immigrants. Previously, she ran a research-based startup originating from NTNU. Adine produces and shares insights on career development through the Karriere Oslo Podcast.
This workshop is open for PhD candidates and postdocs at the Faculty of Humanities.
Walk over the bridge to Oslo Science Park, use the main entrance of the Oslo Science Park marked by the red vertical sign and follow the signs to Building C when inside: Take one floor down, go through the canteen area and into the "glass hallway". Go up two floors using the lift or the stairs. If you have your HF access card you should also be able to enter through the side entry to the right of the main entry to the Science Park, and up to the second floor.
