DJ Minimalism, Black Market Sounds, the House Revolution: Sounding Legacies of Cold War Exchange in Riga, 1975-2000

This presentation will trace paths of exchange for artists, ideas, recordings, and technologies between the Cold War West and Soviet Latvia from the 1970s through 1991. Drawing on archival documents and historical recordings, I will highlight distinct local musics created in response to Western artistic currents. I will also point to ways in which some artists' formative experiences with 1980s sounds and technologies shaped ways of making music that persisted through the turn of the millennium.

His most recent book is Sounds Beyond: Arvo Pärt and the 1970s Soviet Underground (2021). His latest research considers techno music and club culture as both product and reflection of transnational exchange across reimagined European borders at the turn of the 1990s.

Open for all.
