We all know what a song is... right?
Singing is found across centuries, communities, and geographical locations. In light of differences in vocal techniques, cultural settings, historical circumstances, and technological mediations, scholars have tried to meaningfully aggregate these singing practices into musical units, which we call songs.
Due to their ubiquity, there is a shared assumption of similarity between what we individually call songs. But the ways in which we understand songs are usually not shared across the boundaries of different disciplines or even different subject areas within the same discipline.
In this workshop, the participants will step over these boundaries and explore potentially shared concerns and moments of contact between these different understandings. The workshop will foster a fruitful dialogue between individual expertise through methodologies rooted in collaboration and creative practices.
At the end of the workshop, the participants will have gained novel ideas about the potential meaningful similarities in our understanding of songs, and developed fresh perspectives to think about them in their own work.
