CPS Lunch Forum: Timothy Williamson

Timothy Williamson (Wykeham Professor of Logic, University of Oxford) will give a talk entitled "Heuristics in Philosophy".

Abstract

Heuristics are “cheap and dirty” or “fast and frugal” ways of answering questions, reliable enough to be useful but not perfectly reliable. They are recognized as playing a major role in human cognition. I will discuss some general heuristics on which we unconsciously rely in philosophy, which may be responsible for philosophical paradoxes and errors in something like the way that heuristics built into our visual systems are responsible for visual illusions.
