Faglige interesser

Jeg er interessert i det tidlige Romas og Italias historie og historiografi. Jeg har særlig arbeidet innenfor to forskningsområder.

Det første er representasjon og konseptualisering av fortiden i og utenfor den romerske verden. Min første bok, Monimenta (Roma 2011), handler om oppføringen av offentlige monumenter i det midtrepublikanske Roma, og hvordan disse monumentene er tett knyttet til skapelsen av en felles romersk fortid gjennom flere sosiale og aristokratiske gruppers motstridende agendaer. Jeg er også interessert i romersk historieskriving, og jeg publiserte boken Myth and History in the Historiography of Early Rome (2023), redigert sammen med Tim Cornell og Nicolas Meunier, som forsøkte å revurdere det komplekse forholdet mellom ulike epistemiske kategorier i antikkens historieskriving. Jeg er også bidragsyter til den andre utgaven av Brills New Jacoby, der jeg har skrevet artikler og kommentarer om greske og romerske fragmentariske historikere. Endelig er jeg interessert i hvordan historikere før moderniteten har forsøkt å skrive "totale" historier som omfatter hele verden, og jeg er en av hovedredaktørene for den kommende Handbook of Universal History Writing for Oxford University Press.

Jeg er ikke bare interessert i antikkens historieskriving, men også i hvordan lesningen av antikkens historikere har formet kunnskapshistorien i middelalderen og det tidlig moderne Europa. Sammen med Heather Ellis redigerte jeg et spesialnummer av Intellectual History Review med tittelen Ancient and Modern Knowledges (2022), som også inkluderte to artikler skrevet av meg selv om resepsjonen av Livius og Polybios. Nå har jeg planer om å skrive en monografi som tar for seg hvordan lesningen av disse tekstene har ført til til tider overraskende praksiser og eksentriske teorier om modernitet, og som peker på farene ved å tillegge "modernitet" en konkret verdi i kunnskapshistorien.

Mitt andre forskningsområde er historien om antikkens guder og gudinner, spesielt i Roma og Italia. Dette var temaet for min andre bok, monografien Fortuna: Deity and Concept in Archaic and Republican Italy (2018), og boken Gods and Goddesses in Ancient Italy (2019), som jeg redigerte sammen med Ed Bispham. Jeg er spesielt interessert i å finne nye måter å forstå mangfoldet av antikkens guder og gudinner på, og jeg er overbevist om at historisk semantikk har potensial til å forstå hvordan antikkens guder ble oppfattet. Tidligere har jeg fokusert spesielt på guddommer som bærer navn på begreper, som Fortuna, Victoria, Ops og Salus, men jeg har også begynt å eksperimentere med guddommer som bærer selvstendige navn, og har skrevet essays om Fufluns og Liber i Etruria og Latium, og om dødsguden Libitina. Å utvide en tilnærming basert på historisk semantikk til andre typer guder er en del av mine nåværende og fremtidige forskningsplaner, og jeg er spesielt interessert i å gjøre det i forbindelse med en serie case-studier sentrert rundt antikkens Campania.

Bakgrunn

Jeg er professor i historie ved Universitetet i Oslo (førsteamanuensis 2020-2022). Før jeg kom til UiO, hadde jeg undervisnings- og forskningsstillinger i Erfurt, Sheffield, Dublin og Oxford. Jeg tok min bachelorgrad ved Sapienza-universitetet i Roma. Etterpå studerte jeg i Manchester, Pisa og Paris, og tok doktorgraden ved Scuola Normale Superiore (2013) med Carmine Ampolo og Tim Cornell som veiledere.
