Academic interests
I am particularly interested in how artist, in different ways, have incorporated elements from older artworks into their own, and how the availability of reproductions and art history literature has impacted artistic production. I am also interested in how the growing historical awareness in the 18th and 19th centuries changed the way tradition was viewed from being a timeless space of exemplary masterpieces to an expression of earlier zeitgeist and world views. This paradoxically made tradition appear foreign in a new way. And as a result, artists began seeking new and meaningful ways to integrate tradition, considering the expanding knowledge of history and art history. I am currently writing a thesis on the art of Adolph Tidemand, a Norwegian genre painter, from this perspective.
