Academic interests
I am broadly interested in the practice, philosophy, and political uses of history – especially in a Nordic and early modern context.
I am particularly interested in how conditions are set for using the past. That is, for example, how scientific paradigms, religious beliefs, and political agendas determine which pasts to appeal to and to what ends. To predict or improve the future? To instill and increase devotion? To build identity and strengthen community? Pursuing such questions, I especially enjoy seeing how history intersects with other fields of knowledge and intellectual practices.
I have previously worked on the intersections between ideas of poetry, language, and history in medieval and early modern Iceland and am now working on a Ph.D.-project examining how new climate theories and ideas of the North influenced uses of the past and ideas of progress in 18th century Denmark-Norway.
