Nancy L. Wicker, Distinguished Professor of Art History at The University of Mississippi, is an international expert on Viking art and visual culture. 23 March 2026 she will give the Annual Lecture in the Humanities and Social Sciences at the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters. In connection with Prof. Wicker’s visit to Oslo, IFIKK and KHM organize a three-hour seminar with her.

The seminar focuses on the visual world of the northern early Middle Ages, the state of research in this field, and strategies for research dissemination. Specific artefacts that will be exhibited in the new Viking Age Museum will be our point of departure, and we invite a conversation about current research on Viking art, disciplinary path dependencies and how to overcome them, and how to disseminate research-based knowledge of this spectacular visual heritage to a wider public.
