Ph.D. Project

Title: "Mediating Like a State: Shifting Land Dynamics and Value in Norwegian Mountain Commons"

My doctoral research project is an ethnography of common grazing in parts of central Norway’s mountain landscapes. Analytically, the dissertation argues that ethnographic attention to the practice of common grazing offers a new way of understanding how the Norwegian state is active in rearranging relationships between landscapes, rural livelihoods and human-animal relations. Through the theoretical lense of "mediating like a state", the thesis discusses how landscapes and value are materialisations of new land dynamics that emerge through an increasing governmental concern of environmental degradation and a nature in crisis. Mediating like a state refers to ways in which people interact with the state primarily through forms, regulations, policy, paperwork, which are seemingly neutral. However, the practice of common grazing's indirect encounters with the state illustrates the ways in which the state mobilises different sets of values which creates new land dynamics in the mountain commons. This dissertation will be an important contribution to environmental and political anthropology based on an ethnographic and political ecological approach to common grazing in Norway, and how the practice is affected in surprising and unexpected ways that also situate multispecies relations and histories.

The doctoral project was supervised by Associate Professor Ursula M. Koy and Associate Professor Tom Bratrud.
