Trained as an actor at the National Theatre School, in Oslo (1964-69, including one year in the Opera class). Several years of acting at theatres in Oslo and Bergen, studied singing in Aarhus and Copenhagen, MA in Theatre Studies and Italian, University of Copenhagen 1984. Dr. philos 1998, University of Oslo. 2002-2007 professor of Theatre Studies, University of Copenhagen, from 2007 professor of Theatre Studies, University of Oslo.
