  Among the holdings of the Norwegian National Library, there is a group of “Islamic” manuscripts of varying provenance, type, and content. This themed section of JAIS presents a 112-pages tercüman/tarjumān, an (Ottoman) Turkish-(Levantine) Arabic phrasebook from 1766, entitled Safīnat al-maṣādir (lit., ‘The ship of sources/origins’). Its anonymous author seems to have been a (tissue?) merchant who had to deal with Turkish-speaking colleagues, agents, and workers. The booklet’s main section contains “useful phrases”, arranged under headings like ‘to know’, ‘to buy’, ‘to beat’, ‘to smell’, etc. (hence probably the title, as maṣādiralso means ‘grammatical infinitives’), giving sentences in Ottoman Turkish on the left and a rendering in Levantine “middle Arabic” for each on the right. The content is highly interesting from both a cultural-historical and a linguistic perspective. On the one hand, it grants insight into the everyday life of a merchant running his affairs in mid-18th century Ottoman Syria, into economic practices, living conditions, human interaction, trade ethics, and much more. On the other hand, the bi-lingual text is meant to reflect everyday-language usage from a little-documented period.   This article focuses an aspect of Arab modernity that we think has not received sufficient attention in previous research on the Nahḍa: emotionalism. This lack of interest is in marked contrast to the – otherwise unanimously acknowledged – enormous popularity of the phenomenon, a fact that suggests that a closer investigation into emotionalism may reveal hitherto overlooked, though in fact perhaps essential aspects of cultural transformation in the Middle East. The article has three main objectives. First, it seeks to map the state of the art regarding the study of Nahḍa emotionalism. Second, it introduces the reader to a new approach that generates fresh data from larger corpora with the help of unsupervised lexicostatistic analysis. Third, quantitative data extracted from one sample author’s (al-Manfalūṭī’s) collected works by topic-modelling software will be commented on in an attempt to translate it into qualitative insights.

  After 150 years buried in the archives, al-Huyām fī ǧinān al-Šām is now available in a new modern edition. The first riwāya (‘novel’) written by Salīm al-Bustānī, it ran as a serial throughout the first year of the Beiruti journal al-Ǧinān in 1870. At the end of the year, all 24 issues of the journal were assembled into a yearly collection, which forms the source material for this edition. The text has been manually digitised and the orthography has been updated to facilitate the reading experience. The edition may serve as source material for historians of the late Ottoman Levant, as a new access to early 19th century Arabic prose for scholars of literature, and hopefully as reading pleasure for the greater Arabic-speaking public.

  The following article can serve as yet another report from the workshop of an Etymological Dictionary of Arabic (EtymArab).1 Work on a ‘zero version’ of such a dictionary has seen (slow but) steady progress since several years now. Taking the root √SLQ as an example, this contribution gives an idea about the high potential of such a project, but also shows its clear actual limits. The enormous spectrum of semantic values covered by √SLQ—one may distinguish more than thirty meanings that, at first sight, do not seem related to each other—provides a fine illustration of the complex composition of the modern as well as the classical lexicon. The current state of affairs in Arabic etymology allows us, to a certain degree, to ‘sort out things’ and bring some order into this confusing complexity. In many cases, however, research also remains ‘hanging in the air’.

  The idea for this little dossier spécial emerged from a workshop, held in Berlin in December 2016 to discuss the possibilities of fundraising for projects related to the study of the etymology of Arabic. The workshop came as a follow-up of two others: one larger, held in Oslo in June 2013, with the aim (as expressed in the title) of Breaking the Grounds for an Etymological Dictionary of Arabic (EtymArab), and another, smaller one, arranged in Erlangen in December 2015 and designed for a younger generation (“jīl ǧadīd”) of researchers interested in Arabic etymology. All three events were motivated by the fact that, strangely enough, there is to this day no full-scale etymological dictionary of Arabic, although this language is among the most widely spoken languages of the world, can count as the most important living Semitic language, has a long and fascinating history and a rich literary heritage, is the language of one of the “hot spots” of contemporary global politics and, aside from all that, even enjoys the status of one of the official languages at the United Nations.

  This article presents and discusses the monumental ‘etymological dictionary’, or ‘lexicon’, al-Muʕǧam alištiqāqī al-muʔaṣṣal, 1 by the late Egyptian professor of Arabic language at al-Azhar University, Muḥammad Ḥasan Ḥasan Gabal (d. 2015),2 and tries to situate it on the map of positions taken in Arabic and Semitic Studies in the West regarding the question whether or not the triradical roots of the Arabic and Semitic lexicon may have developed, via extension, from earlier biradical ones.

  This volume revisits the “long 19th century” in the Middle East from the perspective of emerging subjectivity as a fundamentally new attitude of the individual vis-à-vis the World. Stephan Guth’s holistic vision interprets emerging subjectivity as the key operator at the heart of the many aspects of the so-called Arab(ic) “Renaissance” (and corresponding movements in Turkish), like rationalism, critical analysis, political emancipation, reformism, moralism, and emotionalism, but also a new language, new genres, and new concepts. Guth’s thoroughly philological approach demonstrates how a close reading of literary texts from the period, a cultural-psychological interpretation of linguistic phenomena and an etymology-informed look into conceptual terminology can contribute to a deeper understanding of what “modernisation” actually meant, deep inside the human beings’ mind and psyche, in their meeting with a rapidly changing world. Twenty essays on language, literature, and key concepts reflect the author’s life-long engagement with the culture of the period in question. The articles are glued together by a guiding narrative that assigns each treated aspect its place in the author’s vision (which includes a global perspective).

  Much has been written about democracy (or the lack of it), political Islam and violence in the Middle East after the ‘Arab Spring’. But how do these aspects relate to the realities of everyday life in the post-revolutionary Arab world? And aren’t there many other matters that are much more important to ‘ordinary’ Arabs than these three catchwords of western media coverage?

  Seit Jahren schon ist der soap opera-artige Roman "Fī qalbī unṯā ʿibriyya" aus der Feder der tunesischen Autorin Ḫūla Ḥamdī ein Bestseller auf dem arabischen Buchmarkt. Der Hauptstrang der figuren- und ereignisreichen (und angeblich auf wahren Begebenheiten beruhenden) Erzählung schildert die Konversion einer jungen libanesischen Jüdin zum Islam und begleitet Nadà auf ihrem weiteren Weg, nach der Verstoßung durch die intransigent-orthodox jüdische Mutter. Ausgehend von einer Analyse der Figurenkonstellation und -charakteristik, des Handlungsverlaufs und der Rollen, die die Autorin den verschiedenen Figuren zuweist, fragt der Vortrag nach der Funktion imaginierter 'exemplarischer' Konversionen in zeitgenössischen nahöstlichen Gesellschaften.

  Erschienen 2012, drei Jahre vor dem Tod seines Verfassers, ist der Muʕǧam ištiqāqī muʔaṣṣal des Ägypters M. Ḥ. Ḥ. Gabal die summa eines langen ertragreichen Gelehrtenlebens. Das magnum opus des ehemaligen Azhar-Professors kommuniziert ausgiebig mit der arabischen grammatischen und lexikographischen Tradition, lässt jedoch die Rezeption und eine Auseinandersetzung mit einschlägiger westlicher Forschung vermissen. Dennoch gäbe es im Grunde viele Berührungspunkte. Der Vortrag stellt Gabals Methode eines ištiqāq muʔaṣṣal vor und versucht, seinen Ansatz – man könnte von einem 'biradikalistisch-mimophonen Triradikalismus' sprechen – mit Ansätzen westlicher Arabistik und Semitistik in Dialog treten zu lassen.
