Academic Interests

I am a social anthropologist with a phd from the University of Oslo from 2008, on the role of kinship in Palestinian politics. Four additional academic interests are:
1. Challenges related to lack of legitimate political representation in Palestinian politics, including the lack of refugee representation.
2. The politics of sports in the Middle East, football as a cultural and political way to understand the region.
3. Political culture; power, resistance and politics seen from below.

4. Political implications of changes of patriarchal structures in the Arab world.

Teaching

I have taught the following courses at IKOS:

Higher education and employment history

I have a permanent position as a first lecturer in Middle East studies. I am from 2017 - 2021 researcher and project leader of the Norwegian Research Council funded project Rebel Governance in the Middle East. From autumn 2019 to autumn 2020 I am based in Beirut.

My PhD in Social Anthropology from 2008 is a comparative study on the role of kinship in Palestinian politics.

I was a researcher from  2012 until  2016, the final year also project leader, at The New Middle East Project (NewME)

I have been a researcher at three PRIO projects since 2010: In 2010 as researcher and project leader of the project “The rule of Hamas in Gaza: Rethinking the prospects for Peace”; and “Prospects for Political Reforms in the PLO” in 2011, and as researcher at Jihadization of the PLO? Prospects and Implications of Hamas and Islamic Jihad membership, together with Jacob Høigilt in 2015.

In 2014 I published the book Palestinske utfordringer (Palestinian challenges), where the focus is on internal political challenges facing the Palestinians today.

I first went to the Middle East as a student of Arabic in 1987-1988. After finishing the cand.polit (MA) in Social Anthropology, with Arabic and Political Science, I worked two years as the Middle East coordinator for the Norwegian research institute Fafo.

I was an democratization officer in Bosnia for the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in 1997-99,  and a project coordinator for East Balkan for the Norwegian Peoples Aid in 1999-2000.
