Assessment of grades

Assessment of grades for the Norwegian Language Courses for International Students at the University of Oslo seen in relation to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Level 3, NORINT0130, is primarily a qualifying faculty entrance exam in Norwegian language for international students at the University of Oslo. Our NORINT0130 (level 3) exam is equivalent to similar level 3 exams at all the other Norwegian universities and university colleges that are affiliated with the National Council for Norwegian as a Second Language.

The NORINT0130 exam serves as a qualifying faculty entrance exam in the same way as Test of Norwegian, advanced level (with the grade Pass), given by Norsk språktest (Folkeuniversitetet Adult Education Association).

Norsk språktest is the only institution in Norway with official accreditation of the CEFR. If university grades from A to F on the different levels are to be linked to the levels of the CEFR scale, it will require extensive testing. Such testing of equivalents will have to be carried out by the National Council for Norwegian as a Second Language.

Courses and exam

The university language courses offer the students a broad and comprehensive course of study, and its individual parts complement each other. The language courses are designed to be open and user friendly.

The final exam in NORINT0130 (level 3) consists of a written and an oral examination in which candidates are tested in written and oral comprehension and language production. In addition to communicative competence, our textbooks provide a comprehensive introduction to 2 Norwegian society and Norwegian institutions to ensure that the students get a good foundation for following studies in Norway taught in the Norwegian language.

After having completed level 3 (NORINT0130), the students may continue on to advanced language courses at our department. In order to be accepted for studies on level 4 (NORINT0141 written and NORINT0142 oral), the students are required to have passed the level 3 exam with the grade D or better in both written and oral Norwegian.

Equivalent level

We consider a candidate who has achieved the grade A in level 3 to have reached a level corresponding to CEFR level C1, while a candidate with the grade C will have reached a level of B2.

A candidate with the grade A in Level 2 will have reached a level equivalent to CEFR level B2, while one with a grade of C will have reached a level of B1.

A candidate with a grade of A in Level 1 will have reached a level equivalent to CEFR level B1, while one with a grade of B will have reached a level of A2.

  • NORINT0130, LEVEL 3 – A ≈ CEFR C1
  • NORINT0130, LEVEL 3 – C ≈ CEFR B2
  • NORINT0120, LEVEL 2 – A ≈ CEFR B2
  • NORINT0120, LEVEL 2 – C ≈ CEFR B1
  • NORINT0110, LEVEL 1 – A ≈ CEFR B1
  • NORINT0110, LEVEL 1 – B ≈ CEFR A2
