Assessment of grades

Assessment of grades for the Norwegian Language Courses for International Students at the University of Oslo seen in relation to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

The NORINT0130 examination (Level 3) serves as a qualifying faculty entrance exam in Norwegian for international students at the University of Oslo. The assessment criteria for grading this exam are standardized and recognized across all Norwegian universities and university colleges affiliated with the National Council for Norwegian as a Second Language (Nasjonalt fagorgan for norsk som andrespråk).

Similar to the B2-level Test of Norwegian (norskprøven), administered by the Norwegian Directorate for Higher Education and Skills (HK-dir), the NORINT0130 exam serves as a criterion for admission to various academic programs.

HK-dir is the only institution in Norway officially accredited to use the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The University of Oslo does not utilize the CEFR framework when assessing NORINT0130, and the A–F grading scale used in university courses does not directly correspond to CEFR levels.

However, our assessment is as follows:

                NORINT0130, TRINN 3 – A and B ≈ CEFR B2

                NORINT0120, TRINN 2 – A and B ≈ CEFR B1

                NORINT0110, TRINN 1 – A and B ≈ CEFR A2

Courses and exam

The university language courses offer students a comprehensive course of study, and the individual parts complement each other.

The final exam in NORINT0130 (level 3) consists of both a written and oral examination where candidates are tested in their written and oral comprehension and language production. In addition to communicative competence, the textbooks we use provide a thorough introduction to Norwegian society and its institutions, ensuring that students develop a solid foundation for pursuing further studies in Norway, taught in Norwegian.

After completing Level 3 (NORINT0130), students may continue advanced language courses in our department. To be accepted into Level 4 (NORINT0141 and NORINT0142), students are required to have passed the Level 3 exam with a grade of D or better in both written and oral exams.
