Academic interests

I am interested in how users and audiences understand, use, and experience (new) media technologies, especially in relation to entertainment media and communication.

In my PhD project, I am studying how users understand and use algorithms and algorithmic recommendations in music streaming services and the possible effects they have on how we think about these technologies and the ways we listen to music. I specifically use a critical realist perspective to study user reflexivity, algorithmic knowledge, and listening modes when using music streaming services.

Background

I hold a research master's degree in communication science from the University of Amsterdam in The Netherlands and a bachelor's degree in sociology from the University of Costa Rica. Before working at the University of Oslo I was a junior lecturer in Communication Science at the University of Amsterdam, where I taught theory and method courses at a bachelor level.
