Parental worry – Understanding parents’ concerns about their children’s digital lives

The project aims to further research-based knowledge about the meanings of parents' worries, particularly in the context of their children's use of digital media.

The project is developed and conducted by the Centre for Studies of Children, Youth, and Media, at the University of Oslo, in collaboration with the international research network EU Kids Online. The project is part of a wider research effort by the centre focused on parenting in the digital age.

Departing from existing academic work on digital parenting, this study inquires into what exactly parents’ worries and concerns mean within these parents’ lives.

The study seeks answers to the following questions:

  • What do parents worry about when they worry about their children’s uses of the internet and the digital?
  • What roles do these worries play in the parents’ and families’ lives?
  • And, in turn, what broader socialising effects and potentials do these meanings have?

Based on the method of biographical-narrative interviewing (Schütze, 1983; Wengraf, 2015), we invite parents to speak – freely and at length – about their lives in general and about their lives as parents – especially in relation to their children and digital media.

Would you like to participate in the study?

We invite parents with children aged 9-16 years to participate in the study.

How is the survey conducted?

  • The survey is conducted in the form of biographical-narrative interviews, where parents can talk freely about what is challenging in their lives in relation to themselves, their children and their families (with regards to digital media).
  • We will arrange interviews on weekdays – either during the day or after working hours – in the afternoon or early evening.
  • The interviews will take between one and two hours and participants receive a Universal Presentkort of NOK 300 as compensation.
  • Participation is completely voluntary. Participants can also withdraw at any time until the data material is anonymized.
