Project description
In the master's programs in Media and Communication, Political Communication and Screen Cultures, all students must first complete and pass a course where you work on a project description / outline for the master's thesis. The course is mandatory and must be taken over the first, and beginning of the second semester, in order for you to progress with your master's thesis:
The exam in this course involves submitting your project outline. The submission is assessed as pass/fail.
Assignment of supervisor
Approved project outlines are assessed by IMK, an a supervisor (normally one of IMK's academic staff) is assigned to you based on the overall assessment (topic, method, empirical data, etc.). If there is a need for special expertise, it may be possible to appoint a co-supervisor. This is normally something that can be considered after you have been assigned a main supervisor and possibly started writing. The assignment of a co-supervisor must be justified, and is done in consultation with the main supervisor.
Approved project description, change of topic
You do not need to apply for formal approval of a new project description, as long as the topic is within the same area in which you have been supervised, and as long as the supervisor approves your new project. This is something you and your supervisor should resolve together.
If your new topic is far from the idea in the project outline, it may be appropriate to change supervisors. This is something you and your supervisor must discuss. If you agree that this is the best solution, you must submit a request with a new project description to IMK for approval. IMK will then assess the new proposal and whether it is possible to appoint a new supervisor for you. The new project description should be sent to studieinfo@media.uio.no, after you have discussed the matter with your supervisor.
