Academic interests

My research interests include contemporary archaeology and historical archaeology in southern Africa, and the Iron Age and critical heritage studies in the Nordic region. Common research foci are memory studies, technology and craft creativity, knowledge networks, relocation and translocality, and development of theory and methodology.

My work in contemporary archaeology extends into critical heritage studies and the relationship between anthropology and archaeology. The focus is on meetings between knowledge systems and ontologies, human/thing relations, and how the material world is engaged in death, burial and ancestor relations. In addition to excavations and archaeological analyses in Norway, South Africa and Zimbabwe I have conducted several anthropological field studies in Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana and South Africa.
